    First oil change

So just got done with first oil change on 2011 500 efi at 10 hrs per dealer recomendation. Followed owners manual...kind of sorry I did the oil line drain and prime. I clamped and idled acording to the owners manual, but never heard the air rushing like the owner manual said so now I'm worried. Anybody have the same issue?

I had the same problem when I primed my 400 but it was a self-inflicted wound. I didn't shut the motor down after 10-20 seconds and to make matters worse I did it twice before I figured it out! :(

    Jon,

The manual is terrible as it doesn't really say if you should shut the motor down or leave it running when you take off the clamp. So are you saying that you 1)clamp, 2)run the motor 10-20 sec 3) shut it off 4) release the clamp and you hear the air rush?

did mine and got it right first try,not that hard.clamp the hose before the cut ,start the engine for 20 secs ,shut off then release clamp.Even drained the base of the engine that some said was very difficult but wasn't too bad at all.Don't be affraid to try thats 90% of the battle.

My dealer has been in business for two decades. He says cleaning the screen and priming is unnecessary. I believe him.

That is correct Noal and you are right the manual does not specially say to shut the engine down apparently it's implied.

not a bad idea to do the complete change the first time around to make sure you get any stray metal filings from the break-in period and manufacturing! Subsequent changes often are a bit more abreviated. Many don't drain the engine crankcase every time and many don't clean the return filter screen. Personally, I do the screen every spring, more to clean out the moisture, (milk), accumilated from winter use more then anything else, and pull the plug wire and crank the engine to pump the remaining pint or so of remaining dirty oil from the crankcase. Not everyones cup of tea but it has worked well for me for years on all of my Polaris ATVs and now the Ranger

    Cheers

Thanks for all the info. So this is what I did. I never could confirm I primed the pump corectly, fortunatley I drained the crankcase when I did the initial oil change. All I did was open the crankcase bolt to ensure oil made it from the resevoir (i.e, oil came out). Confirmed my logic with the local Polaris shop and they agreed.
