    EV LSV Battery Life !

Pleasantly surprised .....so far. I have a 2011 EV LSV manufactured late in 2010. It was a factory demo and I bought it with 40 hours on it. I found that the factory did not follow their own battery maintenance procedures ( dirty compartment, 1 loose terminal nut, a lot of almost dry cells).

    SO....@50 hours (2012):
    - removed and cleaned all batteries.
    - replaced 1 battery due to a loose +anode pole. (Duracell equivalent from Sam's Club)
    - added 1 tablespoon of Epsom salts to each cell.
    - refilled all cells with distilled water.
    - checked all cells with hydrometer....all within spec.
    - checked all batteries with voltmeter....all within spec.
    - installed Battery Mat(s).
    - replaced 1 interconnect cable.
    - reinstalled batteries.
    - installed all stainless steel nuts, washers and lock washers on battery terminals.
    - torqued all hardware to spec.
    - sprayed all battery and electrical connections with protectant.
    - installed Pro Fill Battery watering system.
    - installed optical battery fluid level detectors.
    - installed full skid plate with side wings and Thunderhawk front fender guards to reduce ingestion of debris into battery compartment.

Meticulously maintain batteries, check hardware torque and refill with distilled water. Keep unit plugged in all the time. Stored outside summer and winter.

    @100 hours (2014):
    - had Dealer Service Dept. use electronic battery tester to leak down and test all batteries.
    - replaced 1 original battery due to decreasing voltage
    - installed Battery Minder OBD-48 Desulfator

    @150 hours (2016):
    - had Dealer Service Dept. use electronic battery tester to leak down and test all batteries.
    - replaced 1 original battery due to decreased voltage
    - replaced both 12v AGM winch batteries (both dead).
    - installed Battery Minder 15 amp solar charger/maintainer/desulfator on winch batteries.

I had expected to replace all the original batteries this year but was surprised that 5 are still functioning to spec.
I feel that the Epson salts introduced early in their cycle, the Battery Minder desulfator added and the meticulous maintenance with the Pro Fill watering system has added to their longevity.....going on 6 years.
The solar charger should maintain the AGM winch batteries better.

Optical Battery Level Detector from Jan Water Products:

Battery Watering Systems, Marine Dock Products, Solar Dock Lights

    Part# JWP-BA 134 Standard length 2 1/16" $2.50 ea.

Order one for each battery. Install in one of the center cells. (Center cells loose fluid faster)
You'll need 8.....one for each power drive battery.
NOTE: will not work in AGM winch batteries.

    You'll also need:

    .50" Special Drill Bit Part # JWP - BA - 107 $30.00

This drill bit allows drilling the correct size recepticle hole into the battery case top to the right depth and removes the drill curl without depositing debris into the battery cell and without damaging the cell.

Be sure to center the bit before drilling. I.e. make sure you are lined up correctly.....use the center line of the fill cap to position.

These make it easy to check the battery level and tell you exactly when to refill.

Thanks, but I'm skeptical that I could bring myself to intentionally drill a hole in my batteries! Guess I'll just keep unscrewing the caps.

    Its really not that dangerous.
    - The drill bit works so that the debris curl is ejected in one piece up and out and does not fall into the cell.
    - The drill bit has a stop on it so that you cannot drill too deep.

The critical part is that you align the new hole with the center of the cell. This is easily done visually by using the centerline of the fill cap hole.

    Its really quite easy.

Since adding a visual indicator to each battery and the watering system I have never needed to remove a cell cap.
