I'm having the same problem with my 09 Ranger XP. It only runs a short time then loses power sometimes back fires and shuts itself down. Check engine comes on and shows a code 21. Allowed to cool 15 minutes it will run again for less than 1 minute then same problem. Took to dealer who said battery cable was lose. Problem was not fixed and it still will not run. I have less than 5 hours on this vehicle and can't make it run. Dealer doesn't know what to check. By the way, I have never washed it since it has not run long enough to get dirty.

Tell him he needs to check the crank position sensor, the TPS and the Tbap sensor.

I will give him a note to check these items when I drop it off. At this point I'm pretty fed up with the Ranger. I towed it 1500 miles altogether only to have it not run more than 5 minutes. Polaris won't even discuss. I have to go through the dealer who says they don't know what's wrong and it doesn't act up when they test ride the unit. May go back to brand X for dependable ride.

The problems you are experiencing are not typical for the Ranger. When you consider we have 10,000 members you don't see very many issues here. It sounds like you need a better dealer. You don't have to take it to the one you bought it from. The Ranger is a great machine, and if you get by these issues you will see how good it is.

I'll keep the faith and see if your suggestion guides them the right direction. I have never bought a new ATV and was excited about the "great" Ranger everyone has talked about only to be totally let down. I will let you know the outcome.

Its not uncommon to get air pockets in the engine, sometimes you have to elevate the front of the machine to get the air out. Its possible but not likely that the injectors are clogged.

Carnivore, you were the first to mention the crank position sensor. Dealer now says they narrowed my problem down to this sensor after giving me greif about suggestioning they check it. Said they already had and they know what they are doing. They have to get approval to change because "Polaris doesn't like them throwing parts at problems". Dealer also says I'm wrong about code 21. They say has nothing to do with synchronization. Just means engine has died. Don't need a code to tell me that. Question is if this is crank position sensor why does it run okay for 10 minutes then start acting up when warm or hot. Also why would it reset and consistantly act up after 30 to 45 seconds. I want to know my problem is fixed since warranty ends in October and "Polaris has no sympathy for people who don't buy their extended warranty".

Gary, I've never experienced a bad crank position sensor on a Polaris - but I have experienced a bad cam position sensor on a Diesel and the symptoms are the same, start acting up-quit running-let it sit awhile and it starts right back up-act up again-quit running-etc, replaced the sensor and the problem disappeared. I realise this is from the automotive field but the symptoms sure sound familiar. From what I understand, replacement of the crank position sensor is fairly easy on these machines.

Somewhat puzzling to me that they need permission to change this part. I hear it is simple and inexpensive. Thanks for the reply. I'll let you know the outcome.

Honestly this is a somewhat new symptom that has been apearing recently, so we are still trying to figure out the symptoms and why its doing it, but when it comes to electronics I'm not surprised by anything anymore.
Polaris always makes them get approval before replacing parts.

Finally got my ranger back last night. They changed all of the sensors with no success. Last resort they put a new wiring harness on and the problem has gone away for now. I spent over an hour last night riding between roads, trails and fields to see if anything would fail but so far so good. I plan to ride a lot between now and opening weekend of bow season. I don't want to drag another deer out of the woods. Hopefully I am problem free and can start enjoying my ranger. Thanks to all who responded.

I'm glad to hear its fixed. Sounds like you had a broken wire somewhere.
