Thanks for the quick respose. I asked the dealer if they had a compression test done and he said no due to fact engine was running great. Is this a reasonable request to have them do this now? How much do they cost and what kind of results am I looking for?
Not super knowledgeable about this.
Thanks, Nick |

| It could be running OK and still have lower then specs compression. Should be aroung 180 PSI or better. Not sure what they charge but it is just a matter of removing the spark plugs, installing a gauge and cranking the engine over. I shouldn't take more than one hour to do it. |

If you were buying a used car you should be allowed to check fluids, test compression, take it for a drive--why not a used UTV? If the dealer won't let you do some tests then he's hiding something & you should look elsewhere. If this isn't something you are comfortable doing yourself then take a mechanic or an experienced Rzr-owner along with you.
If you really trust this dealer you could have them do the test. Pay for it if you must--I paid $35, just to have it on record at my dealer.
180 psi is ideal, failure spec is 150 psi. _________________ Romeo, MI

okay, latest in this saga.
I called polaris to double check the dealer info on this. According to them this rzr was built on 8/28/07, not 8/27/08.
Huge difference!!
I am going to call this dealer back. Is it worth buying if it has the airbox and filter upgrades, or do I start trying to get my deposit back?
I have gone from really excited to really frustrated and worried about this whole thing. |

Gen 1 born on april 7 or july 4, i don't remember It was the demo and i bought it on january 26 2008. Now almost 6000km and about 110hr.
ran with underdash blockoff kit, HOLZ's intake vent, old K&N with outerware: no problem.
In august 2008 during a very dusty ride, i check the filter who is almost clog, no dust in intake as usual but as i had write, the filter is almost clog so, having the original as back up, and since we were about 20 miles from the truck, i put the original on At home, after cleaning of the K&N, i was going to put it back but surprise, the intake and the throttle body are full of dust. Took it to dealer and picture taken I'm told to go on and see what happend. Small oil consomption begin...
Never had anymore dust with old KN, New Popo filter or New KN but the damage was done and the oil consomption grow to 1/2quart a tank. No loss of power or anything.
Since extended warranty end soon and the hunting season is done for me and limit the ride, took it back to dealer: top of the engine shut The base is ok.
Polaris stood behind their extended warranty and replaced all the top: ring, piston and cylinders at no fees but a chance that we had the pics
I'll will get it back next week.
Good job Polaris!

| I have 2009 rzr that I purchased recently. I thought I had the gen 3 with updates. Now after reading things here I don't know. Mine was built on 8-18-08. It looks like it has the new intake boot but the air filter is small with a outerwear type cover which I think is the old style. any info would be appreciated Thanks |

| The new filter is large and does not have an outerwear. Should be a free update from Polaris. Check with your dealer. |

decided a SxS is in my future and was looking at a Ranger 400. While at my dealer he showed me a leftover 08 RZR that he is dieing to move out of the warehouse and threw me a deal, ($8600, with roof and cargo box) that really got me thinking seriously about pulling the trigger on the RZR instead, but I need to know what questions to ask and what I should make sure is done to this machine before I lay the cash on the table!
Should I be asking my dealership to upgrade the stock filter system or should I just plan on buying an aftermarket box? Are there any other issues I should be concerned with?
Any help would be very much appreciated!

Jokout,
Welcome to the PRC !!
$8600 with roof and box is a GREAT price for a near "0" mile RZR. Used with 1000 miles are fetching near 8 grand. My RZR has the stock box with the provided upgraded filter and I never have had a dust issue in the throttle body. I guess I do not ride in the dust as much as others.
The '08 was the start for the RZR. There have been minor changes since the " Generation 1". You can use the search feature of this site to read about them all.
If you do buy it I would have the dealer sell you at his cost the 5 year $0.00 deductable warranty with it. This should be around 650-$700. Also a complete fluid change would be a good thing to have done to it. Good luck with whatever you decide. _________________ CLICK ON THE LINK FOR A SLIDESHOW OF HOW WE RIDE

Welcome John!
That's a smokin deal on an untitled Rzr so If you think you'd like something sporty you should jump on it. Polaris has steadily improved the intake problems with the Rzr but for an 08 I would recommend an aftermarket canister/filter system just for the peace of mind. There are several ways to go:
Opti Air or Donaldson system for ~$100 + some fabrication and time.
$250 Donaldson-type system made by D&L Machine & sold on eBay.
$320 UMP system
$450 Dragon Fire Racing system
All of these use the stock intake between the seats & appear factory when finished. ALL have a great history of ending the dust issue and are well worth the investment to save a $1000 rebuild. _________________ Romeo, MI

stopped back at the dealer and got the "Product ID sheet" it was born at 8:22 AM on 6/05/08.
Does this change anything that I should be aware of with the airbox issue?
Am I correct in assuming that the last update came on Sept. 2, 2008, and Polaris extented the warrentee on the motor by 18 monthes?
According to Polaris data base, there are no service buletins on this machine???? But wouldn't this RZR fall under the service notice on Sept. 28, 2008 for the filter update???
I'm a bit confussed! Should I just take a copy of that letter to the dealer?

Any 2010 air box issues?
I noticed the rubber piece on the 2010 RZR-S is the updated according type boot, it is in theory suppose to flex with the engine and prevent the intake boot from being pulled apart where it connects as it did in the past, question is has anybody tested this in the cold, rubber when cold does not flex as much as it does when its warm, you guys riding in freezing temps ever leave your machine outside in the cold over night then take it for a aggressive ride, aggressive enough to make the engine mounts flex to their maximum extents then check to see if your intake boot is still connected?
Thanks. |
