My engine is burning a lot of oil too. I have a Gen1 RZR with approximately 80 hours on it. I serviced my air filter again today and noticed dust past the filter, into the throttle body. I had all the updates done and the problem still there. I'll wait and see what this new larger filter is going to accomplish. Does anyone know what the leak down % limit should be? How about compression? Is Polaris going to replace my engine if needed even after 1 year? I've had mine since May '07.

Its hard for me to understand why they have had this problem going on this long. All they had to do was talk to any ag-tractor manufacturer. We run red tractors day in and day out in severe dust conditions, and not once have we had a motor fail because of dust. Its all in the air filter. Maybe they should talk to Cummings about doing their airbox...

Hello, Newbie Here,

Not sure if this is the correct area to post this note so here goes, please move if needed.

Been a Polaris owner for years, mostly ATV’s but the wife and I are looking into a new RZR.

After reading the number of posts on the Air Box issue I most admit I’m takin a bit back.

So my question is, are the new in the show room models (2009) affected by this same issue?

Should a new buyer of an RZR take a step back and do the wait a see thing?

I guess I’m looking for an opinion.

Buy a 09 built after 9-2-08 that has the upgrades if not buy the BTI/Dragon Fire Racing air box which is what I would do even with the new upgrades to be safe JMO.

Maybe this will help some of you understand a bit more. You will notice that Polaris extended RZR engine warranties out 18 months past the original 6 month if the engine failure was caused by ingestion.

Summarizing: my Rzr was in to the local dealer twice during the warranty for rough running, twice they cleaned out the throttle body. Compression never checked and I was not smart enough to ask for this to be done. After warranty expired I asked for compression check which came back at "125". Dealer said I needed rings. I asked for at least some help from Polaris in footing part (or all of the bill), Dealer claims "they are working on it". It has been 2 months now. I am disappointed by the lack of backup and though I love the basic design of my Razor, I will never buy another Polaris product. I suppose I will find a local independent mechanic, have rings replaced, pay the bill and move on. No more Polaris for me.

When I went through St. George, the Polaris dealer looked of good size to me. Give them a little time, this is all real new. Tell them to call there Tech. Support. Polaris is willing to pay the fix. The dealer just has to figure it out.

I just bought an 09 rzr . When I got home I noticed that one of the plastic clips that hold the filter cover on was broken. I went to the service department and got a new clip. I asked the service guy about air filter issues. He told me that since I bought the service package that when it came in for the 1st service the air filter would be changed to a washable aftermarket filter. Should I have them put the aftermarket filter in or ask to keep the 09 original? If the motor does go bad Polaris could say it was the aftermarket filter, and the dealer may say to bad.

PostPosted: Tue Oct 27, 2009 5:29 pm    Post subject: 08 rzr after 9/01 08 update airbox filter problems Reply with quote

I put down a deposit on a used 08 rzr at a dealership before I saw all these posts.
Did not know this was here.

Anyway I called the dealer and he said this rzr was built on 9/27/08, after the upgraded airbox and filter was introduced. He was a little vague about if this was the same system as the 09 or a stopgap solution for the 08s.

Could someone please let me know if models after 9/01/08 were okay as far as the air intake dust problems.

Thanks Nick

Sorry, date of manufacture was 8/27 /08.
dealer sent me e-mail stating this was same airbox as 09 but different elbow and throttle body.

Am I okay with this model or did this not correct the dust problem.
Any advice would be appreciated. Especially on things to check on this rzr.

Thanks again, Nick

The problem was never really fixed. They patched it up several times by sealing the intake area better and trying different air filters. Best advise is to have a compression test done just to make sure and monitor dust down the intake very closely, specially if you ride in dusty areas. Also check for loose nuts and bolts, particularly ball joins and tie rods. Check oil level constantly. They don't hold very much oil and get low if the engine has ingested some dust... I'm not trying to scare you, just want to tell you from my own experiences. The RZR is a blast overall... One more warning. If you have a wive or significant other, good luck prying the RZR off them once they drive it!!!
