I have a 2003 500 ranger and I'm looking for a transmission mine is grinding going into high gear but there telling me that 2003 tranny is the only one that works for that year can anybody help me out with cross refrence on other machines

Who is "they"?
Post a pic' of your tranny and I can confirm, but chances are that it's the same as the ones from '05 thru' '09. If so, any tranny from a Sportsman 600, 700, or 800 will fit. Some years would need a minor mod' to eliminate the reverse lockout cable, but that's a very simple mod'. Some tranny models will have a park gear and that can be incorporated into yours with a little work.
