I have a 2004 ranger with 1500 hrs, bought it super cheap and have been going through the whole machine. Was owned by a farm so it sat idled for most its life the best i can tell. Anyway i have been having a weird ghost rev limiter problem, i am driving along fine 10mph or so and will stop and when i start to go again its like the reverse rev limiter is on while driving forward. Doesnt matter if i shift from L to H range, last for about 20 -30 seconds and then mysteriously goes away.

Changed oil and all diff fluids
New Air Filter
Replaced belt
I replaced the carb with a brand new unit that came with the machine but that did not fix the problem.

Also max speed is only about 35 mph before it hits the rev limiter on the road.

do i have a clutch issue?

Any ideas guys?

Thanks!!

I'm not sure if the '04 was the same, but most machines are equipped with a switch on the e-brake that detected if the brake was left on. If it is sensing that the brake is on, it will stutter like it's hitting the rev limiter. That would be worth a look.

The '04 500 isn't going to go MUCH faster than 35, but I would expect it to probably hit 40 if you're not carrying a load and don't have a windshield on it. Remove the clutch cover and see if both clutches are cycling in and out all the way. The clutch buttons might be worn, and/or it might need a primary weight adjustment......but don't expect to get much more than 35 mph.

Jerry thanks for the input, i will check the emergency brake setup tonight to make sure the switch is being hit correctly. As for the clutching that is pretty much what i have thought, 35mph max speed and 40mph on the downhills, oh well cant really expect that much speed on an old 500cc engine.

Thanks again.

You could get a little more speed from that engine, but not with the existing tranny gearing. The newer model 500 engines had different gearing and would do a little better, but not much. I'd say you're pretty close to max'd out on top speed without some extensive mod's.
