My son just bought a 2005 ranger 500 , seems to be in pretty good shape and the engine sounds good but top speed just isn't there . We changed the belt , plug , fuel filter and fuel pump but no change .It doesn't smoke and starts easy . Any ideas would be greatly appreciated .

There may be issues with the clutching. If its not fully cycling it could limit speed. The key isn't yellow is it?

Welcome to PRC.

Yeah, something isn't right about that. You "should" have a top speed around double that (40mph) for the '05 500.

Since you have installed a new belt (assuming it was the correct one), then I agree with Curt about the clutching issue. One of them are probably not cycling properly.

He also brought up another good point about the yellow key. That is the speed limiter key. So if the key is yellow, then that's your issue.

no yellow key , but the clutches were next on the list . If we put it on a lift with the seat and clutch cover off it should be noticeable weather there opening and closing properly ,although at 10 years old they should be done anyway I suppose . We'll give them a check and see how things look . Thanks for the input .

maybe a crazy ? but is it in high range or low range. maybe the linkage on the tranny isn't set right .. just food for thought. I have an 05 myself and get about 44 mph in high range. low range is about 20 mph

well just did the clutches and no change . anymore ideas ?
What did you do to the clutches to determine they were fine?

Had an 2004 2x4 with the 425 motor. It would bounce of the rev limiter at 41mph on my GPS.

Something's not right.

Hey...this guy had a great question, did you VERIFY it IS in high range? as in..can you physically notice "high, Low Neutral and Reverse" ??

yep its in but did get under the dash and its pretty bent up and sloppy on the shifting lever and linkage .
ill fix that tomorrow .It does have a set of 23x12x12 mud lites on it that probably robbing a couple pony's ,just seams it should have more .What about a throttle positioning sensor ? yep i'm guessing , ive never touched one of these before . Had my share of work horse atv's but that's it .

You may want to do a compression test or maybe your cam is worn? It could be a TPS sensor but it's unlikely

did a compression check and got 100 psi . We did notice the key was a remake and with the speed being roughly that of the limited key and it does run good and smooth so were gonna change the ignition . My sons gone to napa they said they had one that should fit . Im gonna laugh if that's it but I hope it is .
