I have been chasing a knocking noise in the rear of my Ranger. I started out thinking it was loose lugs but it was not. I have isolated it to the rear diff.

My mechanics phone diagnoses is that it is something to do with the solenoid that engages the turf mode.

Does this sound plausible or are there other normal issues?

This machine has only seen 4x4 once and only been in diff lock a hand full of times so it has lead a pretty pampered life.

If it is a "knocking" noise and does this while driving, I seriously doubt it is being caused by the solenoid. Now the solenoid DOES click when it engages and disengages.....that is completely normal.
