I am wanting to buy a winch and winch mount for my 2014 Ranger 400.

What size winch do I need, just using around the farm and some recreational riding? I want a good name brand winch

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, also where to buy.

Get a Viper winch from Motoalliance (one of our sponsors). I'd go with at least a 4000#, or upgrade to the 4500# or 5000#. I've had the 5k on my RZR4 for 3 years and it has served me well.
I agree with Jerry. Most say a 3500# would be a bare minimum on a SXS but when I got my Viper max it wasn't that much more to step up to the 4k model. The guys at Moto-Alliance are great to deal with and ship pretty fast. The viper really is the best overall winch in terms of price and quality there is. Plus as a PRC member you will get a discount thru Moto-Alliace since they are one of our sponsors!
I would watch out with the 5k viper. That's what I run and on my 500 it would literally drain the battery as soon as I hit the button. I had to upgrade to a large automotive agm battery in order to run the winch. I don't know if your 400 has the same size stator as the 500 so I'd be careful

That's odd. I've got the same winch and single stock battery but have never had any issues......and have used it NUMEROUS times.
Thanks to all for your replies. Looks like I will be contacting MotoAlliance and looking at the Viper winch.
Jerry I don't know it happened on 2 stock batterries. It would literally throw the flashing battery on dash as soon as a load was on winch. After the new car batterry, no problems at all
The 500's charging system sucks, that's why. Aaaand the stock batteries leave alot to be desired. My sportsman 500 was the same way. Battery tender and an odyssey batter fixed that.

Anyways, +1 on the Viper Winch, run them on all 4 of my machines and never an issue. Go with at least a 4000LB MAX or ELITE
Yeah fuse I got a 990 cca amp agm battery with 140 reserve minutes, nothing phases this battery.
yah upgrade your battery if you plan on using winch alot, i also suggest a battery tender..they're great! (just like tony the tiger says)

i put a big ole honkin battery in my buggy...its gonna suck when the belt blows though. LOL
Thanks for the great support of our VIPERS here guys. I can say that we don't have battery issues with the thousands of them sold, so something must have been funky on that one for the wiring or something. Our tech crew can help out if needed, so give us a shout. Thanks!
