My Ranger shifts terrible with or without the engine running, My roller was broke on my shifter pawl but still shifts horrible with the new one. The new pawl didn't change it at all. I bought another new one just in case but it didn't change. The cable is free also when unhooked. Its not my clutch I have that aligned and it shifts exactly the same with the engine off. I haven't been able to find out crap on this. Nothing looks or feels bad inside the trans where the shifter pawl is. Thanks in advance for the help. My brother has a 21 and it shifts great. Did they upgrade the pawl?

I have found some other threads with this problem. I just haven't found a solution. Does anybody think that maybe the gear is defective or the spring is to tight?

Does the new pawl look the same as the original pawl? If you shift by hand with the cable disconnected is it still hard to shift?

If it is I think I'd be tempted to modify the shifter cam (Detent Star) by rounding the tops of the profile slightly and polishing with cartridge rolls and a die grinder. If it's the same cam a new one is only about $30 on Amazon so it would be a relatively inexpensive experiment.

I'm assuming your having problems with your 2019, so not a new machine. Did it shift like this before the roller broke or did the roller break, shifted hard, replaced roller and still shifts hard?

Have you actually removed your clutch cover and inspected both the primary and secondary? Also have you tried shifting with the belt removed. I've usually found something else to be the main fault with the shift pawl is damaged.

Yes it did. I started with all the clutch mods, that was part of the problem.

I have put a whole new spiderand one way bearing from Gilomen in. Also 2 new belts, checked alignment several times. That all seems to be great, It shift identically hard with it not running. I worked with Gilomen on the clutch, they were a huge help but they also have no idea. I have read other threads, even on the General forum but no answers. It has been this way from new.

I cant say how much I appreciate you guys jumping in to help. I love the machine but the shifting is so awful I am thinking about getting rid of it. I hit up the guy on the General forum that has the same problem but I haven't heard back.

So if it shifting hard with the cable disconnected and the drive belt removed. At that point it is something internal in that transmission.

That's what I am afraid of. Unless that gear is messed up somehow? I thought about grinding a little off the detent spring but I'm afraid it wont stay in gear then.

I doubt a detent spring is very expensive, you could shorten it and replace it if it doesn't work. Another option would be to locate a different lighter spring. If you have the dimensions, length wire diameter and overall diameter of the spring you may find one of equal length and diameter but made with smaller diameter wire which would reduce pressure.

Something to consider is that shortening a spring often actually makes it stiffer because there are fewer coils to flex. Essentially springs have progressive loading so if there is less spring to load it will take more force to compress it. This is counter intuitive but it does work that way.

Essentially with the shorter spring the fully extended load may be less but it will take more force to compress it further. Whether the difference will be noticeable on a short spring in this application I can't say.

McMaster carr has a huge spring selection. I'd try to find one the same length and OD. Just a smaller wire diameter.

I agree 100%. I will experiment and check back in. I have a riding trip in a week and a half. I may leave it lie till after that. I am going to order a stock spring so I can get some dimentions. I deal with McMaster carr through work. They have a lot of details on their hardware. Thanks again for all the suggestions!

Ok I ordered a new pawl, spring and gear. Its a pain to pull that stupid cover, clean it up and re silicone it so I wanted to make sure I had everything just in case.

Long story short. I addressed it with all the clutch mods originally trying to fix it. Also I have not had any luck with the people at the dealerships around our area in the past. If i knew then what i knew now I would have pushed for a new trans with them.

I am following along here also. I have a 2019 regular Northstar that has always seemed hard to shift. I have checked alignment, replaced the clutch with a DuraClutch, lubed the shift cable and it's still a bear running or not. It used to be impossible when running before the upgrades, now it's about the same running or not.

I ordered all new parts. I only replaced the pawl. Maybe something is messed up with the gear and or the spring. When they come in I will get some measurements off the spring and try to order one that is slightly lighter in case the new parts don't help. I will report back. It will not be till after March 25th, we have a ride and I don't want to chance messing something up before we go.
