It is for the cumputer hook up when they run a test on your ranger. They put the battery in it so it has constant power for the test. Hope this helps.

I came across this too, while installing some HID lights on my ranger, Well, being a Rocket Scientist and all, I plugged a 9 volt battery into the connection. 3 hours later, when I went to start my Ranger, and check out my new lights.....crank but no start. The good news is it only took 2 beers, 1 cigar, and 32 minutes to figure it out. Wow, that was close!
