Has anyone compared actual top speed of a ranger with stock tires vs larger tires? I'm running 32s instead of 26" stock tires, that's a 23.08% increase. This means the speedo at 50 mph is actually 61, therefore my top speed should increase. The speed limiter goes off the speedo, correct? Any reason I shouldn't be able to hit higher top speeds with the larger tires? With that said, I can't imagine I'd feel safe sittin high in a ranger at 60 mph.

Unless they've changed, it's actually the rpm's that the governor works off of and not the speed. With larger, heavier tires it makes it more difficult to reach top rpm without a clutch kit. With a clutch kit, depending on the setup, the gearing is often changed so that although you hit the rpm limit it's now at a lower speed.

I always check speed with my GPS.

You are correct that you should have a higher top speed with a larger O.D. tire....as long as you have enough power to pull them.

.................Last one, When I put 255/70R15 General Grabber AT2's on my crew, 67mph is very smooth and quiet....

I just installed a QSC clutch kit and a Team Tied secondary. I'll try to get out this weekend and see what it can do.

Interesting... I went from 25" to 30" tires and actually lost 5 mph according to GPS (60 down to 55mph). I think due to a combination of larger diameter, heavier rolling weight, and increased wind resistance. It's a lot more hairy going that fast on big wheels and a lift. I really was just curious to know the effect of the tires on top speed.

Yeap, that can happen. Thus my comment about "if you have enough power to pull them". I would think the 900 should be the least affected......sounds like you need a clutch kit.

The truck tires are a little lighter than the atv tires that I had on mine before...it might take a second longer getting took off, but after that, the truck tires really shine...

I expect you're right, although almost all my riding is on level ground with the occasional mudhole, and long stretches of shallow water. I don't quite have the inclination to drop $1200 on a duraclutch just yet. I may try a simple Dalton spring kit for $65. According to Dalton, in their testing on 900 XP's with larger tires they tried different weights and spring combinations and found the best results with just a simple spring swap for both clutches. Worth $65 to give it a try.

Didnt even realize these things would go 60, that seems awfully fast for a utility vehicle.

32" Terminators, Speedo shows 41 GPS shows 53. Terms are pretty heavy, have some 30" Mongrels coming next week which are quite a bit lighter, interested in seeing what the difference will be. Never tried with the stockers

It's WAY too fast! I don't make a habit of it, but I just had to know what it would do. I did my testing on a straight flat paved backroad and buckled up for safety. :) Probably should have worn a helmet...

My 25" stockers were actually very stable at 60 mph... didn't feel squirrelly at all, and I could definitely feel the ECM limiting me at 60. It felt like I could go quite a bit faster without a governor. But with the Outlaw Radials (48 pounds each!), I never could hit the ECM limiter. I don't think my clutch was slipping at that speed, but I could be wrong.

Hey WFO. Did you have to change wheels when you put the 255/70R15 General Grabber AT2's on your 900? Or did they fit the stock wheels?
