I was wondering what else you can use in place of AGL fluid, that would work as good or if not better than the polaris AGL. I remember reading a thread about changing your fluids, but I can not find it. If you do use something else will that void any warranty. Thank's for any help

The Amsoil that Z71 stated IS the correct oil. i buy it AND I USE The John Deere oil that was mentioned. i buy it in qt bottles at local JD dealer for 3.79 a qt. lol ALSO...the Amsoil replacement can be used in rear Trans/Diff for midsize machines. buy 2 qts and you can do entire machine. Rear Diff/trans and front diff. Then get 2 qts motor oil and a fitler and your set man.

It was stated once before by a admin here, and he holds a Damn good point to it...its not so much how picky you are about WHAT oil you use (its gotta be similar though, otherwise the dang 4wd bearings dont work properly) its more about how often you change it folks.. they hold like 10oz.. (10 shots...about enough to get rum runner upside down in low range) Change it regularly and you'll have WAY less chances of issues. Neglect is a huge problem on ANYTHING with gears and bearings...so change it regularly. i do mine every 75 hours, same time i change engine oil. i change rear diff/trans oil every 2 oil changes.. usually clean...but always better to be safe.

I thought the front diff. takes on demand drive fluid. Polaris sells it as two different fluids. The on demand fluid was a clear fluid and the AGL was the color of trans fluid when I changed last.

AMSOIL has done extensive competitive testing on these Polaris fluids. Polaris AGL and Polaris Demand Drive Fluid tested very similar. The findings indicate the Polaris AGL, even though it's used in the gear-case; is not a traditional gear lube. It's a version of transmission/hydraulic oil. For these reasons, AMSOIL recommends their Synthetic Tractor Transmission Hydraulic Oil (ATH) in place of both the Polaris AGL and the Demand Drive Fluid.

Yes, the TCC Chaincase Lube can also be used and is the secondary choice to replace AGL, in transmission and transaxle.

I have switched all of my rangers to the amsoil gear/chaincase oil.

The onlyranger I've got that hasn't had a transmission failure is the one that has had amsoil hyd/trans/ oil in it from when I purchased it, and now has amsoil gear/chaincase oil now.

The other two rangers I ran polaris AGL since new. 2 transmissions each later I've got the amsoil stuff in them and so far no more failures.

Running John Deere HY-gaurd trans/hydraulic wouldn't bother me either. if I couldn't get the amsoil, that's what I'd use.

Here is what I got from Royal Purple

Polaris, though makers of excellent ATVs and UTVs, provides ambiguous and occasionally changing fluid recommendations for their vehicles. Our recommendations are based on what we could determine based on the scant information available on the Polaris lubricants, and field use by many of our customers. If warranty compliance is a still a serious concern for you on your Polaris ATV/UTV, we recommended sticking to the OEM fluid. Listed below is our recommended Royal Purple product for replacing the Polaris AGL Synthetic Gearcase Lube.

AGL Synthetic Gearcase Lube: Royal Purple Synchromax (part #01512, quart bottle)

Judging by the MSDS for the AGL Gearcase Lube, it is a light viscosity fluid (very similar to an automatic transmission fluid). I have seen reference to people using a Dexron III fluid, but it is not optimal. Our Synchromax fluid is what we generally recommend for gearboxes that specify an ATF-like fluid, as it is of the appropriate viscosity, but contains additional additives that protect gear faces and sprockets and chains found in manual transmissions and transfer cases.

Thank you for choosing Royal Purple, and have a great day!

Best Regards,

Cody Bartkowiak

Contrary to perception and dealer propaganda, Polaris branded filters and Polaris branded lubes are not any better than anything else on the market. Polaris wants to keep customers "in house" so as a marketing decision they will only recommend what makes them money. They want a monopoly on what people buy for their machines.

That’s just the way they do business.

What about engine oil? Hasn't Polaris changed the oil grade recently. Seems it used to be 0w-40 and now its 5w-50. What are some good substitutes for PS-4?

yah in the engine i still run 0w-40.. ive got a chart like this that covers other oils as well. Turbine oils and such for screw compressors and other misc heavy industry machines. IF ya can run this oil in machines that cost over a million dollars, that are used in EXTREME pressure scenarios...then by god, it'll hold up just fine in a machine thats a fraction of its cost, doing a fraction of its work.

Mike-

Are you saying that the Amsoil trans/hydraulic oil is perferrable over the gear/chaincase oil in the polaris transaxels?

I got the impression that the gear/chaincase oil was optimal for these transmissions?

Thanks.

I was just on Amsoil web site and it has chaincase & gear oil listed as a recommended replacement for Polaris AGL fluid. I think Z71 is right target about the Mfg. making money of you. Polaris is no different than any other Mfg. that makes money after the sale. That is why I asked this question, most of the time their is better products on the after market. I think I'am going to try this stuff, with a recommendation form POS POLARIS like that,it is worth trying. Anyone with that many hours on these machines, I would think has learned something.

From AMSOIL. Note they revised their recommendations in late 2013 based on their recent testing of Polaris lubes. Weather one is better than the other (in the trans or transaxle) is subject to interpretation. If you are happy with Chaincase Lube, continue to use it. If you want a product that can be used in both the front drive and the transmission/trans axle, the Tractor Hydraulic Transmission Oil is recommended.

These recommendations are based on the testing of the Polaris lubes and what AMSOIL products are similar.
Michael

I hope this clarifies the recommendations.

AMSOIL ATH replaces both;
Front Drive Fluid/Demand Drive 2877922 and
AGL 2878068-2878069 (Gearcase lubricant and transmission fluid)

AMSOIL SVG replaces ATV Angle drive fluid 2876160 and 2872276

The TCC can also be used to replace AGL, and is our secondary choice. If customer is happy with the TCC, they can continue to use it.
