What are the two boxes under the hood on my Ranger 500 carb 2005 which connect to the air filter box under the seat?

What is the recommended mod here? Just replace the air box filter if so what is the best kind? Where are the best prices?

One is for incoming air to the clutch, other is like you said to the air canister. The mod. that was recomended by some is to remove the original filter in the canister and and install a K&N under the hood. That is what I did and it seems to have more low and midrange without much change to high RPM.
