I haven't been too impressed with the Polaris fluids since my transmission seems to grind more and more. I want to switch fluids and I've seen people say they like both and seem to be good with them. Is there any difference other than prices? All things being equal I'd just base my choice on which is less expensive unless someone has a particular reason that one is superior to the other and not just I like it.

Thanks

Just got this back from RP about what they recommend:

Good morning Barry,

For your 2013 Polaris Ranger 900XP we recommend the following:
If Polaris factory warranty is still a concern we recommend using an oil that is specified in your Polaris owner’s manual.
Typically it will be a Polaris oil.

Engine:
Our primary recommendation is Royal Purple Max Cycle 10W-40 (part #01315, quart bottle).
Max Cycle: Max-Cycle Synthetic Engine Oil for Motorcycles | Royal Purple

As a slightly less expensive alternative to Max Cycle you can also safely use Royal Purple HPS 10W-40 (part #31140, quart bottle).
HPS: HPS - High Performance Street Motor Oil | Royal Purple

We also recommend the following for your Polaris:
Polaris although makers of excellent ATVs and UTVs, provides ambiguous and occasionally changing fluid recommendations for their vehicles. Our recommendations are based on what we could determine based on the scant information released on the Polaris lubricants, and extensive field use by our many Royal Purple customers who are also Polaris owners.

Please see below for the Polaris fluids we have identified and the RP fluids we recommend as replacements. If warranty compliance is a serious concern for you we recommended sticking to the OEM fluids during the warranty period.

Polaris Angle Drive fluid: Royal Purple Max Gear 75W-90 part #01300, quart bottle);

Polaris AGL Gear Case Lube: Royal Purple Synchromax (part #01512, quart bottle);

Polaris Demand Drive Fluid: Royal Purple Synchromax (part #01512, quart bottle);

For a PVT transmission (Polaris version of a CVT or Continuously Variable Transmission), based on what we have seen being used by our competitors as replacements our Royal Purple Max ATF (part #01320, quart bottle), or Royal Purple Synchromax (part #01512, quart bottle) will work well.

Fuel System:
Royal Purple Max Clean (part #11722, 20oz bottle);
Max Clean: Max-Clean Fuel System Cleaner for Maximum Fuel System Performance | Royal Purple

Cooling System: Purple Ice (part #01600, 12oz bottle);
Purple Ice: Purple Ice® - Radiator Coolant Additive | Royal Purple

Grease: Royal Purple Ultra Performance Grease (part #01312, 14oz tube);
(chassis lube points)
UPG: Ultra-Performance Grease | Royal Purple

Thanks for choosing Royal Purple and have a great day!

I use AMSoil, mainly because I use it in my truck and as long as I'm ordering for the truck I might as well get fluids for the Ranger. With regard to the recommendations above from Royal Purple, the one point of disagreement I have is the engine oil viscosity. I run 0w-40 which is a lot closer to the OEM spec than 10w-40. I ride in cold weather so the lower viscosity is good for my Ranger. If you're consistently in hot weather then maybe 10w-40 would be OK but that's still fairly far from the spec viscosity.

If I wasn't already a hard core AMSoil user I would probably wander the aisle at Wal-mart and see if they stock a 0w-40 in synthetic. (I think only synthetic or synthetic blends go down to 0w, but that is based only on observation of whats available on the shelves)

Get something name brand and convenient. I have to order by AMSoil products. I have to keep extra on hand just in case. I can't run down to Wal-mart and pick up an extra quart like you can with Mobile 1.

Walmart carries RP, my local stores have 0W-40.

The grinding is the transmission not seating in the right gear from the shifter. It's a problem we all have but seems to be getting worse. Just wanted to switch fluids to see if it would help.

Switching fluids most likely won't help, switching secondaries will :)
Probably not. If it's grinding going into or popping out of gear, he probably has worn dogs in the tranny. But I do agree that switching fluids is not going to help a thing. The factory fluids function just fine. You have something wrong besides an inferior fluid.

It is grinding from stop and not really popping out.

Based on what Royal Purple states, they have never tested Polaris lubes and are basing their recommendations on "scant information". AMSOIL has done extensive competitive testing on Polaris fluids and base their recommendations of rear world test data.

Btw - Royal Purple was gobbled up by a big oil company.
