A new city slicker rookie here. I'm on my second ranger and want to add winch, lights, and radio. What size winch (Brand) is best for the XP900? Great place for info. Thanks in advance!

In the truck world the rule of thumb is 1.5 times the weight of the vehicle. If I didn't already have a winch available before I bought my Ranger I probably would have gone for something with a rating of at most 4,000 lbs. If my winch isn't getting it done then I add a snatch block to increase the pulling power.

Warn would be at the top of my list for brands. I have two Mile Marker winches and they would not be at the top of my list - second or third maybe.

I have a Warn RT40 on my 500. I haven't had to winch the Ranger yet, but have used it for pulling logs or trees.

The winch I wanted was the winch a skidder uses to haul a twitch of logs....but the weight alone was 3000 lbs...So I got the standard #4500 lb one. First one I've ever owned with 'rope'....I certainly hope its as tuff as steel cable, not just something the Chinese's are selling us Americans that doesn't work. I'm not going to look to get stuck. But if you ride alone sometimes,,,you want to make sure your prepared.

Might want to look at a 4500 or 5000 Viper. Good winch at a good price with good customer service!

Agree with the suggestions above, and get one equipped with a synthetic rope for safety reasons. The new synthetic lines do not store energy while under load and if something were to go wrong (rope break) then will harmlessly fall to the ground. On the other hand, steel wire does store energy and if it breaks then it will violently snap back. Depending on how much you are planning to use the winch you might consider a second battery as they use a tremendous amount of energy.

I will suggest the winch I've run on my ranger for 2 years hassle free. Viper elite widespool 5k with synthetic rope. If I were buying a winch for a ranger I personally would not go any lower than a 5000# winch. They also offer great customer service over at moto alliance. No doubt they can get you fixed up right.

I have had several Warn 3000 and 2500 pound winches on ATVs and always found them lacking when you really needed them.

I run a 5k on my RTV and it does well but I haven't ever really called on it in an extreme situation.

I will be putting a Viper 5k wide spool on the new Ranger when we buy it.
