was driving along at a brisk pace, heard a loud pop and now the clutch is shot, exploded is my guess. wont shift while running and acts as if it has a manual clutch that is constantly grabbing.

Just took the belt cover off and found a half shredded belt. Taking it to back to the dealer tomorrow morning to see if we can get it back in the trails asap.

Spoke with the dealer and we found out that the center bolt seems to have backed off, and the belt ate it

It is a CVT type, just like the Ranger. You select Low or High range with the shifter. The CVT clutch does the rest. The pulley on the motor shifts in as the rpm climbs and forces the belt higher up the surface thereby changing the effective gear ratio. To see this in action, leave the cover off, place the tranny in NEUTRAL and crank the machine. Now, watch as you give it gas. It acts the same as when in gear.

upon closer inspection , it seems as though the cvt is fine, but the problem is with the (dis)/engagement of the idler? (thing that disengages at idle) When the bike is started in neutral, all is good, shift into gear and it takes off.

It sounds like a fluke. The units we had in Minnesota got hammered pretty good and I KNOW the one I got my ride in was hammered extremely well. The units the press had in Arizona endured a lot also. Heck, even the Jagged X model got raced for a good ways before losing a belt. Just make sure when climbing any hills and getting in some good steep binds like you did in the video to put it into low range. In low speed, steep climb situations or in rough spots, you will quickly heat a belt up if not in low range. Once it gets hot, it would be easier to peel apart like yours.

After watching the video, I was wondering if it wasn't too much too soon. They were driven a lot harder than that in Minnesota without a problem though. It doesn't sound like a big deal and I hope you get it straigtened out soon.

Yes, make sure we know what happened, so we can watch for the same thing. I hope they get it back together for you tomorrow so you can go out and continue the first real test for us. Good luck.

I am really concerned. I owned a '06 700xp and traded it for a '07 xp just cause I wanted the dash, now I am in the process of trading it for a rzr. I did not think the rzr would have this problem since the engine and tran. are one piece. At least there is a reason for the xp belt problem. I hope they find the reason, if not they will problem blame the belt.

Did you adhere to the break in procedures as stated in the owners manual? I know I would'nt have until I saw this happen to you. The manual states Vehicle Break-in Period"The break-in period for your new Polaris is the first 25 hours of operation, or the time it takes to use the first two tanks of gas."PVT Break-in period:"A proper break-in period of the clutches and drive belt will ensure longer life and better performance. break in the clutches and belt by operating at low speeds during the break-in period as recommended. pull only lights loads. Avoid aggressive acceleration and high speed operation during the break-in period."
I know I never read the directions but in this case i believe I better even though my instinct tell me to ride it like I stole it[:D]

I don't think there is a major concern yet. Things are going to break and go wrong with each individual RZR. When a pattern starts to develop, that is the time for concern. Maybe we should start a thread with break downs on the RZRs to track possible patterns.[?]

I would just as soon everybody keep your problems to yourself untill you find out what the real problem is.
You just know someone that read the first post is out spreading the word about how a clutch exploded and shredded a drive belt on a brand new RZR. Then telling everyone what a piece of junk the RZR is. I don't want people thinking I bought a piece of junk even if it turns out that way. Its going to hurt the resale value[:D]
I sure don't see a shredded belt, I see a belt that chunked about 4" of the outer skin and would still work to get you home.
I have have not seen one of these clutches but I would guess they would have some kind of adjustment to take up slack on a used belt. You said the dealer thought a bolt backed out. I think the bolt may be the adjusting bolt and when it back out and caused the clutch to tighten up on the belt. Probably during this time with the belt getting tight you stopped and caused the belt to over heat inside clutch pulley and when you took off and got the RPM up the belt threw the rubber off where it over heated. The clutch getting tight would also be why you didn't feel a shift and it felt like it was in gear all the time.
If that is the case thats a very minor problem and didn't rate the blew up my clutch news.
But who knows with the loud pop you heard something did break in the clutch assembly. I hope not.
I really don't know if a clutch adjustment bolt even exists, but it should.

Thats my story and I am sticking to it.[:D][:D][:D]

Good luck and I hope its something simple.
