So my rear CVs (I'm pretty sure) were making a fair amount of clicking and popping. Turning, going straight, rear locked, and rear open. I took it in to my dealer to see if I couldn't con them into a warranty set of new rear axles. They said the CVs looked just fine, but it was their extreme angle that was causing them to make noise?!?

All I have the the Nethawk 2" lift and I have the shocks in the center hole on his revised mounting bracket. I've got about 80 hours on the lift and the machine (I put it on right after purchase).

Has anyone else had any issues like this? I think my shop is full of $(%(?*$*!(#)@(%. How could it be making enough metal on metal contact to sound like that, and there is no problem?

Discuss.

Clayton - I have an almost identical set-up as you, including using center position in Nethawk's mount. I have 73 hrs (over 50 with this set-up) and it has done very severe service, including hauling firewood, (gravel, rocks & dirt out of a wet steep pit) & plowing snow. Mine is as quiet as a church mouse. No suggestions but I do not believe noise is caused by this set-up.

I tend to agree with you. A have about the same hours and about the same uses (mud bogs and plowing). I guess I'll have to look into it myself, since my shop hasn't been much help.

Yeah, I will. I'm debating...

1) trying to diagnose the problem through disassebmly and careful step by step troubleshooting

or

2) rallying it till it breaks then finding out what it is that way [:D].

With as busy as I am for the next month and a half...I'll probably try #2 for a while then go to #1 if it's still running at the end of June [:p]. I just find it next to impossible to believe that it's related to the angle of my rear CVs as the dealer is saying. There are far too many people with this lift and ZERO issues.

This is just a thought but have you checked to see if the noise might becoming from the parking brake assembly. On a recent ride we determined a suspect cv noise to be the pbrake assembly scuffing and popping on a friends machine.I also had a problem I thought might be cv noise on an 06 500 but when I completly removed the pbrake and drove the machine around the noise went away.

I'll take a look at that this weekend. I also spent some time driving around last night hauling wood, and I noticed that the popping goes away when I have the rear end unlocked. I don't know if that means the problem is in my rear end, or if it means that when one of the CV tries to bind up a little the other side relieves the pressure.

The troubleshooting continues...

My problem should be solved. I was mudding over the weekend and snapped a rear CV (at the diff) while pulling my buddy out. I'm hoping that the CV was in poor shape and getting ready to let go. I'm getting gorillas for the rear and I'll report back on whether the problem is solved.

Gorilla's rock! Good investment. We have them on the front and will do the rear as soon as the rear goes.

I know this isn't really any help in solving your problem, but mine makes a clattering noise back there too. It only happens when you unload the rear end....like riding the engine brake down a big hill and getting to the bottom and there's no longer any torque on it. It's kind of hard to describe, but I'm curious if this is the same sound yours is making? I've thought about videoing it (so I'll have some audio for you guys to hear) and posting it but haven't gotten around to it yet. It's done it fromn the first day I got it with 25 hours on it. It hasn't caused any problems, so I've just chocked it up as one of those little quirks and keep an ear out to see if it gets worse....so far, it hasn't. I've been keeping an eye on this topic to see what you come up with.

I don't know if I have prevented any noised by accident. About every month I have liberally sprayed my front & reat CV joints (aiming for the boots) after washing the mud off. Ran suggested this after he had to replace boots. I haul heavy loads and use engine braking a lot - so far not a bit of noise with 78 hours on it. I do very little trail riding, mostly heavy hauling & plowing.

That's a pretty common sound and I wouldn't be worried about it at all. Mine was more like the CV binding up and popping. It was on flat ground and at slow speeds...especially when turning tight with the rear end locked up. The dealer told me it was the bearings wearing...but that just didn't sound right to me.
