Machine is a 2014 Ranger 900 Crew 350 miles...

When changing the belt I noticed 2 things...

First, the secondary is making a bit of noise when spinning it by hand. Is there anything in there that should be making noise when spinning? Here's video of the clutch and noise...

The second thing I noticed was the little bolts on the primary that hold the weights all have a little bit of slop in them. Is this normal or should I tighten them up? Heres a video of the loose bolt..

Thank you for any insight...

I am guessing that you have a broken spring in the secondary but that would cause very low revs and no backshift. Maybe it is a spacer on on the shaft (on snowmobiles they are under that bolt and also behind the secondary) but that noise sounds like it is inside.
Those primary bolts have a shoulder on them so they don't get tight against the towers so no worries there.

Well, took off the secondary and nothing jumps out at me as to anything that is wrong. It seems like it could be just the rollers that ride in the helix that is making noise.

The rollers definitely rattle around a little but in the first vid you can hear a heavier metal clunking. Could that be the metal washer that sits in between the 2 halves flopping around?

The helix side doesn't make a sound when. I shake it around...Here's a vid showing what I observed...

The reason I'm wondering this is I'm trying to chase down a semi violent shuttering on take off when in high, doesn't do it in low or reverse. I just want to eliminate any possibility of the clutch/belt being the issue before I start poking around the trans...

thanks...

As it turns out, nothing...belt is fine...

I am trying to chase down a shudder while taking off in high gear, only thing I could think to check is the clutches, belt, diff, and trans...

I was really hoping it was just the belt :)

I'll still put a new one on to test it and check that possibility off the list...

Update...

Like you guys said, put new belt on and runs like new, looks like no more high gear for me :)

Noise in the secondary seemed 'normal'...spring was fine, the rollers made a little chatter like the third video showed...just put it back on and all seems well :)

Glad you got it resolved.... Have you considered upgrading your clutches? I've pretty much been limited to Low gear as well, since I started running 31's. I just got a full clutch package from DDP, but haven't installed it yet. I'm hoping to get better use of high gear again, among all other benefits. I'll have some feedback soon.

My only concern with upgrading the clutch is I'm assuming that will increase my minimum speed while descending steep hills...

As I'm sure you know, if you want any assistance braking from the engine while descending you have to brake with your left foot and keep the right foot on the gas to keep the rpm's up to keep the clutch engaged...if I increase the engagement rpm's with a clutch kit I am assuming that I won't be able to crawl down the hills as slowly...throw in the extra distance covered with each revolution of the larger tires and I'm wondering if I'll be bordering with being unsafe in a few areas....

Last year we were in an area with very steep hills, the Ranger and trailer full of a couple moose/gear/camp etc. and was grossing over 4000 lbs with 2 of us in the cab... I'm not sure how well the dinky little breaks would have performed without the assistance of a little engine breaking :)

...what do you think, do i have it all backwards?

I understand where your coming from, but I don't think a good clutch set-up will adversely affect you in any way. I asked Dale to set my clutch up with engine braking.... So I'll soon see how that pans out. I'll be sure to PM you, if you'd like, with my results as far as engine braking. Dale can set your clutch up according to your driving style and specific mods to your machine. He'll at least get you headed in the right direction, and you can fine tune it to better suit you (if you so desire). You ought to give him a call at least, and see what he has to offer. Dale is a very personable fella, and knowledgable to boot! I'm sure he'll be more than happy to answer any questions you might have. I know that I kept him on the phone for a while, with question after question... And he was more than happy to help.
