Hello,

In 2006, I purchased a new Ranger 500 4x4 EFI. Other than the rear differential lock failing, and the front differential lock failing, this has been a nice reliable machine.

About a year ago, the engine started to become hard to crank. I would turn the key to the start position, and the engine would instantly start to crank, but would stop short of what I presumed was top dead center. It was as if there was too much compression, and I would have to twist the key several times, in rapid succession to get the engine to get past TDC, Once past TDC, the engine would fire up quickly.

I put in a new gel battery and cleaned the cable terminations (which were clean to begin with). The problem persisted.

Next, I bought a new Moose Racing starter. The problem got a little bit better, but now that it is cold outside, the problem has returned in full force.

Is there an automatic compression release on this engine? I am at a loss as to what to try next.

One last thought. The last time that I changed the oil, I put in 10w40 full synthetic instead of 0w40. Perhaps this is causing it to be harder to crank?

Thank you,
Greg

The compression release is your problem.

There is a weighted release lever that is in the middle of the cam. It elevates a ball higher than the exhaust cam lobe which bumps the exhaust valve slightly open to release compression. What happens is the ball wears a groove in the exhaust rocker arm and also in the weighted release lever that activates it.

You'll want to replace:
Exhaust rocker arm 3084913
Release lever 3085348

My friend acquired this Wrangler TJ and got a non-running Ranger 500 for cheap. The owner mentioned the compression release issue. We'll just finish installing the shocks, bumper, and jeep accessories onto the Wrangler before we can take a look at the quad.
