Best In The Desert Terrible’s Town 250

Jagged X RZR came in fourth out of 13 entries in sat race after problems with the belt. Only four finished the race out of the 13.

Don't get me wrong (I am not one of the RZR haters that seem to be popping up, as I have had a deposit down since the week they were announced). Aren't you sayng that they finished last among those still running? I think it's great they finished, but I am not sure I will say it's a congratulatory event. Any idea what the belt issue was or if it was a fluke thing?

I'm thinking maybe the RZR was stock competing against some souped up units. It seems the last racing information I read that was the case. It would be interesting to here the details though.

I have no idea what they have done to the RZR as far as performance, clutching or what belt that they had on but from what I heard they were doing well and I do believe that they are racing today also.

Matt,
Wait until you get your hands on this thing, you'll look like this [:D] for a week, except with mud and bugs in your teeth.

Matt,

I wasn't able to get the answer on when your dealer was going to get the first RZR. Like Allan said though, wait till you get to drive this thing. A permanent smile will be on your face!!!

To me, this was the race that I've been waiting for; as JaggedX has been the only company to date out of all these Polaris partners who has actually spent the money and taken the time to come out here and talk to us all consistently on a one on one basis. Again, I hate to be the one who continually has to bring things like this up; but I'm out here looking to build a long-term business relationship with somebody regarding these machines and I see these guys as acting like Brian and Matt did back in '04 with the Rhino launch.

Here are two guys who made it 'simple' back then:
We're going to be here consistently and answer your questions...you're going to figure out that we're fair with our prices and as well as expected or more on our service...so what more was there to talk about besides giving them your credit card number?

Thanks for the update; as I think there are a lot of people out here wondering if this was finally the race where things were put together in a manner that we would all expect and if info would indeed be forthcoming on any 'quirks' that we may have to deal with.

Information is a two way-street (as the PRC trip just demonstrated) and we need vendors like JX who come back from real-life experiences like these to complete the circle; just as the PRC staff is about to do with our questions solicited earlier. http://www.prcforum.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=394

Congrats to JaggedX also! [8D]

LOL, it was only a joke about the dealer info, as I really did not think you would have the time or opportunity to look into it, and for the moment, I am patient, although this could change once I know someone else is out there burning up the trails why I am still looking at pics on the web!![:D]

I think Polaris was very smart to get the aftermarket involved early, not necessarily to race the machine (since they are likely competing against some well-sorted out competition, given the head start they are working with, along with tons of readily available mods), but to allow them to have aftermarket parts coming down the line to get the enthusists or potential racers some options to work with. I am in no way trying to be negative about the finish, even though I thought my comment was a valid one. If it were a Prowler we were speaking about on a Pro-Polaris Forum, I would expect I would not be alone in thinking that the last place finish (among those still in the race, and this is no small feat I am sure) would not be exactly a slam dunk sucess. Still, I am sitting here on the couch, and not out there busting my you-know-what to prove the mettle of the machine. I do compliment Jagged for taking the challenge, and I hope to see more reports about results soon. I would be interested to know about any info pertaining to the belt issue, since it could apply to those of us planning on using them out there in the field later on, and we all know there are literally dozens, if not hundreds of people who want to see the RZR turn out to be an inferior machine, if for no other reason that they own brand Y. The funny thing is, I love that brand too, and I would like to see more people in that camp accepting of the advantages having a worthy competitor will bring in terms of updates to their machine as well.

Matt,

Maybe finishing was more of a feat than you've already agreed with and conceded....yet if I had been so brazen as to have 'dared' bring up what you just penned regarding this belt?...my oh my...I shudder to even think about it.[:)]

If someone wanted to take issue with my concern, I really would have nothing to say, except it is a sincere question, and as a future owner I would hope everyone would see the reason for my inquiry.
I would also hope people would apply my track record of being unbiased to any decision they made about my post. I am just asking the questions, since I do not know the answers[;)]

This is the second year we have sponsored JaggedX and last year of the three cars finishing out of seventeen all three cars had been built by Jagged. This year two out of four that finished were built by Jagged. This race is the toughest desert courses and the carnage out there was awesome. The race starts out with the Trophy Trucks, Class one cars and jeeps taking the field first before the UTVs and making a mess out of the track before they get there. We saw $100,000 machines rollover and blow engines and whatever the first twenty miles of the race. The track hadn't seen enough rain in the last year to repair itself and some of the slit beds were over two feet deep and the dust took its toll on everybody. With no wind and 95 degrees it was a brutal day on the track. Bill from Jagged was driving to test out the machine and even after breaking the belt and replacing it on the course he caught up and passed the other UTVs and a lot of the class one cars and trucks. Bill will fill you in on more of the race but at every pit that we were at, the engine was running strong as it did for the complete race. As far as finishing fourth with a machine that has never seen that kind of course was a great feat. Speed is not the great winner but endurance and the RZR proved in had that. Oh and the frame held up just fine.
As soon as I sort thru the picture I will get them posted and in the July issue of Cartwheelin we will have coverage of the race. Make no mistake about it the RZR proved to be a worthy opponent for the first time out and made a lot of people take notice.

I have not had time to get a full race report up yet but I will as soon as I can get my office back in order from being gone. I will say this. The Polaris 1919 Jagged X RZR was built in about three weeks. The entire drive train was pure Polaris, no engine mods, stock A arms, stock sway bars, stock steering including tie rods. We finished the car on Thursday afternoon, drove it around the block twice at our shop and loaded it in the trailer. The required saftey equipment and cage structure made the car tip the scales at 1406 lbs with no drivers and no fuel.
I know that some may not feel that a forth place finish is not too impressive but lets take a few things into consideration. The Winner, Ryan Combs was driving a highly modified Rhino and had a flawless day (good job Ryan). The second place car also from the Combs team was a Jagged built Rhino, which happened to be the only UTV to finish the Vegas To Reno race EVER. The Third place car was the Desert Toys Rhino of Cory Sappington. Cory has more desert racing miles than any one in the sport to date, and an extremely fast car. The Jagged RZR finished just minutes behind Cory,Who finished just minutes out of second. We are pretty happy to be among the few finishers of this race. It is difficult for most people to realize just how difficult it is to get a UTV to the finish of a desert race.

As for our belt issue, not quite sure what happened, the belt just started coming apart at about mile 19.After changing it we drove the remainder of the race with no problems. Maybe a bad belt or perhaps it was damaged when originally installed? We had a few other little problems though out the day, had some shock issues and a battery go bad but all in all the car held up great it will only get better from here.

We added nearly 600 lbs of chromoly and other race goods not to mention myself 305 and my co driver 200+. All said we left the line close to 2000. the shocks were set up based on stock weights, so naturally they were not going to last the race, however they did feel great for about the first 80-90 mi. The car was not nearly as quick as it was when stock (think about towing another RZR behind you) The handeling was great for the first 80-90 mi when the shocks started to fade the handeling became progressively worse. The stability was still good. only one time did we get a little out of whack when trying to change tracks in a silt bed at about 30 mph. Top speed was pretty close to stock but it just took a little longer to get there. No heating issues at all (cooling system also completely stock) The engine never lost power and ran the entire race flawlessly.
