What tool is needed to secure the band around the ends of the CV boot during a boot replacement?

Will needle nose pliers work or is it better to spend the money on the proper tool?

You might make needle nose pliers work but it won't look too good and may not perform well in the long term. IMHO you want a good seal at the CV boots to prevent entry of contaminates that will shorten the life of the CV joints. The proper tool is under $20 on Amazon, maybe less elsewhere. Going cheap isn't always cheap in the long run.

Also, there are two different types of clamps that require two different tools. One is a pinch type and the other pulls tight then gets folded over.

For others looking for these pliers, I think the tool he is talking about is the "Lisle 30500" pliers. The part number for the pliers in the service manual is SPX (Kent Moore Tools) PU-48951 or 8700226. I also found a reference for Oetiker 14100134.

The Lisle tool is the one I use.

Those aren't the tools I got but yes I got mine on Amazon and for about 20.00
