I have a 2007 700 xp Ranger and the emergency break doesn't hold very well at all. When I try to engage the break it goes almost all the way down with almost no effort at all. It's not until the last few inches that you feel some light resistance.
Is there adjustments that can be made to it or does it need to be replaced? If it needs to be replaced can your average shade tree mechanic do it?

Ok so after reading that (XP Park Brake Adjustment) and doing some internet research, it seems to me that the "EB's" are a constant pain on older ranger models. Is there a discent fix around the design or do you have to keep replacing the pads and doing adjustments throughout the life of the machine?

They're a headache. I finally got fed up and completely removed the one on my '06. I learned to live without it, but if you can't, I would add a hydraulic line lock and do away with the OEM system.

Same here............Took it off completely...........I haven't done it on this Ranger but Line Loc is way cooler.......Line Lock Brake Lock Roll Control Electric Kit | eBay...
Electric are fine and very low amperage draw, but they also make manual ones if you'd rather go that route (no wiring to install and won't run down your battery). I was gonna use a manual one and hook it up to my e-brake pedal to activate it. Just never got around to it and learned that I didn't really need it if I planned ahead. Luckily there are no shortage of rocks (to use as a wheel chock) in east TN.

I live in MN where it's rather flat. I don't see myself having to stop and park it on a steep incline. So I think I'll just leave it as is a pack a wheel chock in storage for emergencies.
Are they better on new models?

The 2009 700 XP's seem to work much better
