So I'm thinking about taking my ranger (the greatest invention ever) out for my first trail ride. There is a trail on an abandoned railroad bed in central MN called the "South Sioux Line ATV Trail" and it's 127 miles long. No I'm not going to drive the whole thing, I just want to ride for 3 or 4 hours. So I've never road mine more than 30 minutes in the short time I've owned it. How long will a tank of gas last me? Do I need to take some spare gas with me? I'm planning on cruising at 25-30 mph if the trail conditions & weather allow. I'm not totally comfortable trusting my gas gauge, it showed me I was at a 1/8th tank (on square darkened on fuel gauge) but it took 5 gallons to fill it. Isn't the fuel tank 9 gallons? I have a 2007 700 xp.

Marc, you Range varies with the speed you are running. On 2009 700 I have gone as far as 120 miles on one tank, but it was getting near empty. When I know I am going on a long run I carry a 2 gallon can of gas to replenish if need be to get me back home.

Spare tire, jack, air tank or 12v compressor, tool kit, can of gas, jug of 50/50 coolant, matches or lighter, flashlight, fishing pole.... and food, beverages, tarp, dry clothes... anything you can't imagine needing if you break down 50 miles from the truck. If space allows, I'd plan it as if it were an over night trip, just in case it becomes one.

Fuel consumption can vary GREATLY depending on average speed, low or high range, etc..... To be safe, don't plan on more than 80 miles. I have done 100 miles on a tank, but I was sucking fumes and the engine was sputtering when I got back to the truck.

Putting around for a few hours you'll be fine, you'll probably only burn 1/2 tank with the riding you describe....
....having said that, I'd still throw in a jug of fuel in the back along with all of the other stuff mentioned ....(and some :).....)

I went 142 miles on my Ranger last summer...most of the trip was cruising around 30-35 mph on desert hard pack and gravel roads. I always carry a 2 gallon can of fuel but I had neglected to put it in the Ranger that day. I fueled the Ranger when I was back in town and it took 7.5 gallons of fuel. The last segment on the fuel guage was blinking...had me nervous as hell.

I feel the rangers are very consistant in their fuel consumption. The older 700s I though always got around 70-80 miles per tank, while their big brother the 800 would get closer to 80-90 miles. I always figured this was close to 8-10 hours of ride time.

The 07s stock sending units were not reliable, and didn't work. On mine I went back to the tried and true 05/06 fuel gauge which was the float style incorporated into the gas cap. you might have to lean over the passenger side of the machine to see how much you have left, but it's very reliable.

On a 3-4 hour ride that you're talking about, you won't burn much more than half a tank. if you burn that much.

I take my mistress. She's a lot more fun than the wife, especially on bouncy trails. :D

Otherwise, my Ranger has a set of tools, extra fuses, fire extinguisher, spare belt, winch, tow rope and spare tire.

Great to hear you will get the chance to go ride, good for you and do enjoy it. Here is a nice thread on various items to consider, hhttp://www.prcforum.com/forum/108-mid-size-rangers/59827-oh-crap-box.html
