I assume you mean the prongs that stick up on the back of the rack? They keep your lumbar, ladder, canoe, etc. centered and from sliding off. I use this rig to get back in the woods for whitetail hunting and it sure will help carrying my stuff to build deer stands. It come with some tie down straps to strap your load to the rack. I hope this answers your question.
