One of the first things both my wife and I noticed was all the wind and dust flying in our faces while we ride the RZR. We've had a windshield on our standard Ranger since we bought it, so we've been accustomed to having the protection. I happened to have some 1/4" plexiglass lying around the shop so I made a half-windshield today. I found the gasket material for the bottom of the windshield from a local glass outfit. I used zip ties to attach it. Now that I see how good it works, I might tweek it a little (like cut the tolerances a little closer on the bottom. I have enough plexiglass lying around that I might now make a full sized one just for giggles.

Great idea and it looks good too. How about the durability? Do you think you may have a problem with breakage?

Ashley,

I have a couple of comments about that. I was going to install a small piece of aluminum angle along the top, but having driven now without anything like that, I feel that it doesn't need it. The 1/4" material is stout enough to handle the wind resistance and without that piece of angle there is no visual obstruction). Secondly, this stuff is pretty forgiving, so I don't see breakage being an issue (If I hit something that hard, the windshield will be the least of my problems![8D]). Of course, it can scratch, but I cut it such that you look over it anyways. Finally, I have enough of that material lying around the shop that if it breaks, I'll just make a new one. It took only about an hour to make.

Ashley...the height of mine is 10 & 1/2" from the dash. It could be a touch higher I think -- like maybe an inch. The width varies because the roll cage tapers as it goes up. My windshield is about 39&1/2" at the bottom and 38&1/4" at the top. I hope that helps and good luck!

before my rzr arrived i ordered the factory half windshield.. i really like it. i can run 60mph and my hat stays on.. it also helped us keep from getting sanded when we were behind other four wheelers.. (didnt stay in back for long though)
over all i really like the windshield though.. it has a little lip on the top of it that keeps the rain from gettin ya too.

I'd recommend Lexan (polycarbonate) over Plexi (acrylic). Lexan is shatterproof and will withstand vibration longer without cracking at the attachments.

Home Depot has plastic edging for use with 1/4" paneling found in mobile homes if you want a more finished look.

An almost factory looking mounting would be to use cable clamps. I know they are available in 1 3/4" but may be hard to locate except online.
"Rubber Cushion Clamp" aka "Adel" clamps:

How do you guys feel about the 1/2 shield? Does it do a good job of buffering most of the wind while still giving you that "not quite enclosed" feel? I really want a shield, but if a 1/2 offers enough protecting...then I'd rather have that vs a full windshield.

i like mine alot it's breezy but not windy and most of the dust goes up an over.. something else that's cool up in northern ok at night it got a little cool and with the windshield you got some air off of the radiator so it kinda kept things warm.. also when it sprinkles or there is dew on it, you can still see because you're looking over the top of it.. i was riding with a guy in a big ranger with a full windshield and his was hard to see through.
