Well I had planned a trip to Silver Lake sand dunes for about the past 6 months. After a costly rebuild of my quad this winter a trip of that scale is just not doable by meself especially with gas prices!!!! So with a week of planning we decided to make a family trip of it and head to Haspin Acres in Laurel Indiana.
We took 2 Honda 450r's the 07 Ranger XP and my little girls mini quad on the trip- we had one heck of a time.

When we arrived I was so excited to get my quad off the trailer and within 10 minutes of my first ride I was STUCK. Lazy me thinking 18" motocross tires were gonna work, well they worked great for the track but when we got on the trails they were useless.

I was so mad I put the quad on the trailer until saturday morning when my brother showed up to ride. I only used 3 gallons of gas in my quad in 3 days and 10-15 gallons in the ranger!!! That tells you how much fun we had in the ranger I didnt even want to ride mine haha.

Notice grandpas cane sticking out above the roll cage in the last pic. It was his favorite cane and well err I think I fixed it for him a low hanging grapevine kind of got stuck on it haha. Hes pointing at the mudhole that we just went through with his bent cane [}:)]

This same play area saturday was full of stuck vehicles, for entertainment we would just sit at the top of the sand pile in the shade waiting to see who would get stuck so we could pull them out [:D]
This honda got stuck and his dad tried pulling him out with his 4x4 but didnt even knock the mud off it..

We've debated on going to Haspin to. It's not very far from us and I'm kinda like you, with the gas prices the way they are I'd just a soon ride as close to home as possible. Was it very crowded? A few friends of mine rode up there about 5 years ago on their quads and they were a little concerned about the rail buggies and larger vehicles on the same trails. Any input on the trails?

Thanks, Brian

This was only my second trip to Haspin Im near columbus ohio so its still a haul for me but closer then some.
I told grandpa that I will probably never take my sport quad on those trails again haha he seemed less then happy- that means no driving for g-pa!!![:D]

Haspin has its advantages and disadvantages.
1 being there is no width limit.
2 being there is no width limit
3 no trail markings or anything of that nature, I was told my first trip if you get lost just head to the top of the hill, and I'll be darned they were right.

I had my mind made up we wouldnt try going on a crowded weekend which is why we went last week rather then this one. The 4x4 Jamboree in Lima ohio took alot of the traffic away from Haspin I guess because we darn near had the place to ourselves on Friday, Saturday alot of people showed up but I wouldnt say the place was 50% filled. Sunday the racers really filled the place up!!! We didnt have many problems with traffic the place is big enough you can go quite awhile without seeing too much traffic and even less if you know where the less traveled trails are.
I only saw 4 or 5 Rhinos 1 Ranger and tons and tons of Jeepers
ock crawler type vehicles.

There are some really really gnarly trails but nothing the ranger couldnt handle, a few times I thought well this is it im going to be the one to flip it, or get stuck but it was a trooper!!!!

My best suggestion would be to scout the place out with a riding buddy one day then if YOU think its your cup o tea take the family on down another time. Im sure you know to never ride without a buddy but its just too easy to get hurt bad and not be able to find help offroad.

So yes it can be crowded if I were taking my family I'd go on a wednesday, thursday and friday. There seems to be alot less beer drinking and driving then on the weekend. Dont get me wrong I have drank enough to float a battleship but you have to know when and where to drink, my policy has always been to crack a few after the dust settles, when your telling your fish stories around the camp fire.
