Assuming clearance is no issue, and, I am not terribly concerned about the tread ( though I understand that will have some bearing) How much tire can/will my 400 live with for daily use? 27's? 28's? i assume much bigger than 28 and the juice is not worth the squeeze.

Clutching, clutching, clutching...if you can find a company willing to assess your clutching situation there's no telling how big a tire you could run. You will however, notice divisibility issues in other areas but as far as turning them and riding on them, the 400 Rangers would be capable of running a 30" tall tire with the right clutch work.

What do you hope to do with the unit after the big tires are installed, i.e., just cruise around on flat trails/streets or heavy mud riding or hill climbing or taking it swimming?

Ahhh I don't do much more than run it around on the farm. Mild mud while hunting, and running bird dogs. I certainly don't beat on it, honestly the most abuse it gets is winter when the snow hits.

27" bighorns are going to run well over 28" and the 400 will have no problem pushing them in most any conditions with nothing more then a lift and maybe forward arms to clear them! I was able to try out several tire setups borrowed from riding buddies and the stock 400 setup was surprisingly capable of using the extra rubber!
The clutching/gearing setup on these Rangers is completely different then on a Sportsman so the effect of a clutch change is going to be MUCH different then on an ATV and generally much less effective!

Cheers
