I'm preparing to pick up a 900 in 2 weeks. While i normally dont insure (self insure) stuff like this, the ranger is expensive enough and will be spending its life at a remote and unsupervised hunting lease, i decided to get insurance. After searching this site, progressive and Allstate were the two big names but i didnt find a lot of advice or specifics so i will toss a few details out there in case it helps someone. I suppose most of these units are financed and that will dictate insurance requirements so maybe this doesnt apply to those, but since i pay cash for toys, insurance is at my discretion.
My primary interest is theft or natural disaster, hurricanes in particular since i am in florida. This would fall under comprehensive and is very inexpensive. About 100$ per year. Adding collision raises it to 273$, still inexpensive but almost 3x the cost of basic theft, vandalism and natural disaster coverage. Since i am less concerned about colliding with a tree or another atv on the hunting lease, i will skip this coverage. However, i asked about coverage during transportation of the unit, something i will do when i buy it but doubt i will trailer it after that, unless some major svc is needed. Here is where i got very mixed advice, disappointingly, but i figured it out through the process. Basically, your auto policy will cover property damage and liability caused by you when trailering, your trailer or trailer contents (ranger in this case), but, unless you have collision coverage, the trailer and utv will not be covered for their own damage. For example, if you swerve to avoid a bicycle and your ranger comes flying off the trailer and crashes into a building or another car, you will be covered by the auto policy for damage to the other vehicle or building but unless you have collision, the ranger would be totally uninsured. With collision coverage, your auto would cover property damage and liability and your collision coverage specifically placed on the ranger, which would be appx 270$ per year, would cover damage to it.
In my case, since i will be purchasing and transporting the ranger 4 hrs, i will put collision on it for a few days and then drop down to comp to cover what i really care about, theft, vandalism and natural disasters so 100$ per year, very cheap... Rates will obviously vary by city, state but in my case, allstate was the low cost provider tho Ms. Flo at Progressive was very sweet on the phone
Hopefully this helps someone, but at the same time, if you believe i am missing something, please advise before i secure my policy
