A guy on another forum sent me a PM which included the following advice:

"One final point. brand such as Polaris and Can-Am don't work well with tracks because they don't have locking front differentials or in Polaris's case if the rear wheels stop spinning in 4wd the power to the front wheels/tracks is cut off and you go back to 2wd. Which for tracks is a big problem. I found out the hard way and on top of all this it's written in the manual (small print)."

Opinions?

Complete False, Camoplast offsets the number of teeth on the dive gear of the tracks, between the front and back, when you have tracks on and switch to 4x4 you are in 4x4 without the rear tracks having to slip first, I have been running tracks for 3 years now, camoplast brand, and there is never a problem

Here's some more details to about his side of the argument;

"As for the tracked polaris and can-am's. Can-am brought out their own Apache tracks to fix the problem with their visco-lok front dif lockers. The apache gearing is quicker so it tricks the visco-lok into engaging most of the time. If you put camoplast tatou tracks on a can-am outlander one of the front tracks stops turning often and it acts like an anchor. This normally happens when you come out of a turn and speed up or when going through slush.

Polairs i believe i explained this in the last PM. I've helped many tracked polairs atv/utvs and it's actually easy to do. You simply slip a pole or log/tree under the back of the polaris utv and lift a little while they press on the gas a little and away they go. The rear tracks spin a little and the 4wd comes back.

There are several videos on youtube showing the polaris ranger on tracks where the 4wd or power to the front tracks shuts down and you stay anchored in that spot until it notices that back end is up in the air and spinning. It's written in the polaris manuals and mentioned in a few of their promotional videos as well. Normally with tires this isn't a problem but from personal experience hauling a wagon up will with a polaris the 4wd cut out on me far too many times and in some very dangerous places. The last couple times it did this to me i drove back 20 miles to get my honda or my arctic-cat diesel atv. I had the polaris ranger 6x6, ranger diesel, X2 and they all had major problems."

Wow!
And here I've been using my 900 with the camoplast tracks for two seasons completely unaware of these serious engineering flaws.
I've hauled big loads of birch through deep snow, traveled far into the mountains with no trails, and plowed heavy snow falls all through the last 2 winters. Funny how I never knew how bad the running gear was performing.
Very strange.

my '13 900xp certainly isn't aware that it can't perform with camo plast 4s tracks, so it just goes on performing flawlessly. It's goin into it's third winter, and there has never been any issue. I have 2 friends with canams who run just fine with camoplast as well. I believe apache just to be a canam sales gimmick, because as jcrincon said camoplast gears the drivers to take care of that exact problem

David, we probably have a 1000 members running tracks and I don't recall ever reading that this was a problem. As Jamie stated, by gearing the rear differently, the front will 'think' there is slippage and stay engaged. A lot of "Internet Engineers" (including me!) out there - take their advice with a grain of salt.

Edit: Call the manufacturer of the tracks you are considering and talk to the real engineers about your concerns.

Yep,same boat I,m in,want to upgrade to brutis front diff to save rear tire wear ,my camoplast tracks work great,3 winters, different drive sprockets on the front for sure,my guess.Rub out two rear tires, change sprockets and not the track,s ,just a matter of cost,

Response for Trailcutter.
I just noticed your ridiculous statement regarding the on demand system.
I have used Polaris Sportsmans and Rangers for 20 years and have always appreciated the superior Polaris 4X4 system. You may need to get your system checked if you feel it is operating in a substandard manner.
Your calvalier statement and the totally untrue subject of this thread take away from the normally great source of information we get from this forum.
