...that it came into my transmission belt housing. When I went to take off it was like it had not engaged the transmission. I opened the drain plug and black-ish water came pouring out - probably 1/3 gallon or so. After it stopped dripping I put it back in gear and after a while it was back to normal.

Has anyone had this happen? Is there anything I can do to prevent it? (other than a snorkel)

This is very common on the '13 900s. Even washing them can get water in the housing. I think some install frog skin or something like that to help keep water out. I am a HUGE proponent of snorkels though, really adds peace of mind even if you don't play in the deep stuff regularly. Good kits are fairly cheap and DIY even cheaper. Never know when you will run up on the unexpected deep stream crossing or hole.
