I really wanted a new one but felt I first needed to make an offer (to keep the wife from getting even) on a low hours used one nearby. I assume that 105 hrs qualifies as low hours. They accepted the offer....darn. I'm still pretty excited. If I catch the bug I can always make my second one a new one.

I take delivery in a week. Any suggestions as to how I should go about checking it out maintenance wise would be greatly appreciated. I'm not naturally mechanical but have ordered a shop manual and as long as I take my time, I should be able to do regular maintenance. I have a BMW RT Motorcycle which I maintain.

Also any suggestions as to what products to use to clean this beast would be helpful...it is a little dirty now and I want to make it look brand new.

Also, any information specific to the 2004 model year would be welcome.

Thanks.

You'll like the Ranger Charlie. A service manual is a great first step, they are well laid out and will help you do as much as you feel comfortable doing maintenance wise.
Welcome to the forum

BTW Mine stays outside 24/7 and the rain does a good job keeping it clean, but others have had good luck with furniture polish waxing it.

Welcome Charlie! You're smart to get the service manual. That will tell you a ton of stuff that will help you do your own PM. Yes...that is low hours. I have 150 on my '06 and that is also low hours, IMO. I guess the first thing I would do is check all the fluids -- if not change them.

Charley, Welcome to the forum.
If I were you I'd have the dealer give it the 30 hour service. They check about 25 or 30 items and change all the fluids. I just had mine done and I feel good knowing that everything is right. They even checked the belt and clutch alignment on my 07 xp. I watched them and they checked a few things that I didn't even know what they were doing. It cost me $145.00 and I felt like it was money well spent. I'll take it back at 100 hrs and have it done again.

Charlie, last Dec. I bought a 06 500 EFI and I sold a 2004 500. Huge mistake, that 2004 was sweet and started at the flick of the switch. This 06 is the hardest starting atv I've ever had ( and that's quite a few ). It sometimes dies on its own and makes a very funny sound before it goes completely dead. Then it takes a few key turns to get it going again.

I do like the independent suspension better though but all in all I wish I had my 04 back.

I would just do as some else has said and have the shop do a checkup on it. I had zero problems with my 04 and as you can tell I'm having lots of issues with this 06, infact I took it to the shop this morning, again,\
Good luck with your new Ranger you will love it!!

I'm picking this thing up tomorrow so I'm pretty excited. I borrowed a friends 5X10 open trailer (I know this is the minimum size) for the 2 hour trip and hope to have a couple of hours of "Rangering" in by tomorrow night. I'll keep you posted and will post some pics after I get it cleaned up. "Rangering" where I'm taking this thing will include hauling a bunch of pine needles UP HILL..... I'm looking forward to replacing my wheelbarrow with this baby.
