Hi I'm new to the forum and just like many of you I had a belt explode on my 2006 Ranger XP while putting along in a open field. They told me that it had been caused by a broken motor mount. (Under Warranty) Now also as many of you I was pulling a strand of barb wire tight on a fence and when I went to set the parking brake,I hit the gas pedal instead. The XP lunged forward up the fence a foot or so before I could hit the key to shut it off. All of this whithin two seconds or less.( There is going to be a EZ pull in my near future.)Now to the big problem I now have no low range at all, it is just like another nuetral! I took the shift cable off and tried to put it in manually but it's just not there. I didn't notice this right away because after the ride up the fence, I Backed up and when I left to head back to the house I put it in high range. Everything in reverse, nuetral and high range works fine. There is no noise coming out from the gearbox and I don't want to tear it up. Of course it's now out of warranty!! Any suggestions other than taking it back to the stealer, I mean dealer? I am somewhat of a mechanic but don't want to create more trouble if it's too much to handle.Has anyone been into their gearbox through the cover at the linkage? I also wondered if the electronic switch on the gearbox is just to control the lights on the dash or if it would have anything to do with this problem? It doesn't look like it controls anything but the lights to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan

I can tell you the switch in the shift box is just for the light. Does if feel like it's shifting into low normally and just won't go, or does it not feel right at the shift lever either? If you removed the shift linkage and tried to put it in manually and that doesn't work it must be in the tranny itself. I can't belive lurching forward would cause any major damage but ya never know. Wish I could help more.

Thanks for the reply Arrowhunter. It feels like nothing happens when you put it in low, the position is there, both with the shift lever and when you put it in manually. You know how if you shift into any gear that has motion, especially if you move it in slow how you can feel it and hear it. It's not like that at all. It feels the same as when you shift into nuetral.I can't believe it could bust something in the tranny either. This machine isn't ridden hard at all. I use it around the farm and have only had to use 4 wheel drive a coulpe of times. I'm pretty disappointed with it. My dealers first comment when I took it in for the broken belt was, It may not be covered under warranty!!They sure didn't metion about any problems with bad belts or motor mounts! If this little thing caused something to break in the tranny, I will probably be looking for something else.I know that there is a 16 tooth gear and a 31tooth gear along with some other parts on the shift shaft thatI suspect could have broke from looking at the parts list. But would like to hear from someone who has been into one before I open it up.Thanks again for the response. Dan

There two drive chains in the trans you may have broken one.If you remove drain plug look at the bottom of drain plug the chain can wear a grove
in the plug if it has stretch. Also look for metal when drain oil.Its very easy to rebuild.

I can't add anything to tranny problem but I know that the EZ-Pull is the most safety oriented mod available. I have had it on mine for almost a year & I wouldn't use my Ranger without it.

Thanks a lot for the info on the chains Billybob,I ordered a service manual and will be tearing into it within the next week. It doesn't look like there is a lot to it (famous last words) I was glad to hear it's a simple rebuild. Would you know which chain would be for the low range? I have both part numbers but won't be ordering anything until I get it apart and see what else I might need.I still have trouble believing that it broke something so easy. I have been very happy with the performance of the xp. Great ride, goes anywhere etc. I am in the rugged hiily and rocky terrain of the ozarks here in Missouri and I do have to say I was really suprised how well it performs. it just seems like two breakdowns in 8 months is a little much when it's not ridden hard. I do ride my harley hard but the xp is more of a tool around the farm. Thanks again, I will let you know whats up after I get it apart. Dan

Hey Turbodog, I don't have to worry about the carb trouble huh? 700efi. I'm curious, what kind of tranny problem did you have? I would guess it was under warranty huh? If not, how much did it cost to repair? Thanks, Dan

Dan in missery (Missoury? - oh well, you know where you are)
I just had to throw something in here - last weekend I was at a dealer a couple hundred miles from my home, looking for a Triumph Motorcycle dealer with a better attitude. I ended up in Eldorado Springs, Missouri - Randy that owns the Suzuki, Polaris, and Triumph dealership there has a GREAT attitude, everyone at the dealership was super friendly, we had a broke Triumph that came from being fixed by the service department at a dealer closer to our home with more problems than when it went in. The staff at Eldorado Springs dealership seemed very competent, described what they believed to be the problem, buffered it with the disclaimer that they could be wrong, have to open it to be sure, etc. but the speculation, estimate of if it is one so much, if it is the other, so much more is almost unheard of from my experience with dealers in this industry. I have to say today, I would be hard pressed not to take my Ranger 6X6 (which I have just made a deal for from the mediator of another forum, and not picked up yet) there for service should it need work I cannot accomplish. As for the Ranger overall - I did quite a bit of research - forums and talking with individuals, and IMHO I feel that the Ranger is as good a machine as there is out there. Even military Humvee's can break! The Ranger is a well thought out, well built machine that is relatively simple and straight forward in design and not overly complicated (to be read "not Japanese") to maintain or repair. As for my credentials, I have been a partner in bike and ATV shops in the past, I have ran service departments in multi-line dealerships, and I have 25 years of experience as an controls, instrumentation and industrial maintenance technician. Good Luck, and should you need to talk to a dealer that is straight forward and down to earth, try Randy at Eldorado Springs Polaris!

Engages 4wd at will, especially in reverse. Dealer has had it for 2 weeks and still hasn't even looked at it.

Well that is not tranny problems. That is front diff problems. Try changing the oil and see what happens. Could have water in it, or just low on oil. Also could be a bad cage, armture plate, or a few other things.........Curt
