My Polaris has a spook!?!?
I know for sure it's not my number 14 boot doing it.

Driving the 500 along, and suddenly it dies, as if the key had been turned off, or ran out of fuel. No warnings, just stops running.
Was told by Polaris dealer; clean the carb, and replace the fuel pump. But still does it.
The 500 will run for a few minutes, and then dies again. Dealers reply; bring it in and we'll take a look at it... $$$ cha-ching!

Whats been done so far... changed fuel pump 2x, carb is clean 4x, fuel tank drained and flushed, replaced all fuel line, fuel filter 2x.

I've now decided it may possiably be an electrical problem... Recently when I would start the machine, I would have to hold the key just right to get the starter to engage. It would start, but then the gear indicator light would go off, and the headlights would not come on, nor would it engage in to 4x4.
So I take the ignition switch apart and cleaned the grease and dirt build up off of these two small contactors that are shaped something like this- [
Now the machine won't start at all, nor will any electrical stuff work.

Has anyone encountered a problem like this?

And does this sound like the ignition switch is faulty?

Anyone know where I could buy one, and not spend a fortune on it?

Or does anyone have any other suggestions I could try.
All suggestions are welcomed and will be considered.

In 524 hours, other than this and the fact it's a pain in the back side to change the oil on, I've had no problems with the machine.

Thanks,

What Mike said, ignition switch would be my first guess. Also check the gas tank vent hose if you haven't already. let us know what you find out Dan.

Pretty common problem. The wiring harness that is attached to your handle bars is pulled to tight, when you turn handle bars it disconects power to key switch, loosen the wires so they have more free plsy. You might have already broken the wires but I doubt it.[:)]

They taught me:</u> [)] [;)][;)]

1. If the motor sputters before it stops [xx(] - it probably needs gasoline. (Check fuel supply.)
2. If the motor suddenly just stops [xx(] - it probably needs electricity. (Check battery and wiring.)
3. If you see smoke or smell something burning before it stops [xx(] - quick look to see where the smoke and smell is coming from. (Careful, it may be very hot.)

Let us know what you find...

Hello ARR. Can I just call you Rocky? hahaa!
Maybe there's a slight misunderstanding? This is a Ranger, all I see is a steering wheel. Thanks, for your input just the same.
It sure makes life more difficult with the UTV broke down, and my Brides Yamaha can't handle this terrain very well, but then again her Yama-mamma is a golf cart. :)
So, it's the tractor or hoof'n where the INTL. won't go.
Thanks again, and have a good one!

One new ignition switch to be picked up from nearest dealer asap, 54.99 + the Govt. part. If this doesn't work, my 45-70 needs a few rounds ran through it. :)
Thanks for your assistance, and I'll post the outcome.

Picked up a new ignition switch today, and even got a discount; $50.80 out the door.
Five minutes removing and installing the ignitions and the Ranger starts and runs like new again.
Also, all electrical stuff works as it should.

Results; a lot of checking, asking, looking, cuts, scrapes, and a few lost and found wrenchs. To boil down to 50 bucks and five minutes of work.
Thanks again for your input on the problem, especially your effort Jim.

Gonna ride til dark, maybe after. :)
