Hi guys,

In order to remove the prop shaft on my 13 Ranger 900 do I just pop out the roll pin on the front diff and slide the shaft back to get it off?

or do I have to remove the u-joint on the bike?

My rear u-joint is gone where the shaft meets the transmission.

Is there any trick to getting shaft off?

Thanks, Shane

Shane I believe my shop manual says to remove the bolts securing the front differential, shift it to one side and pull the prop shaft out the front. You may have to remove the front bumper too. Have not had to do it yet the Info I gave you seems to be the way to do it.

Most Rangers and RZR's that I've worked on are exactly like Roadrunner described. Not rocket science, just a little tedious.

So I un bolted the front diff and removed the bumper and couldn't get the prop shaft out...

I then removed belt cover
And tried to take it out the back and that didn't work either...

Am I missing something?

If Polaris can't build something to last at least make it easy to work on haha

I hope I don't have to pull axle out of diff because that is never easy on this bike...

Thanks Shane

Men- need advice, 2013 900XP 1500ish miles, has a rattle sound in front drive line and sounds like the start of u joint failure, any advice?
I think that only the Crew has a bearing carrier in the middle of the driveshaft, so you're probably right about it being a U-joint......and it's not unusual for them to fail between 1500 and 200 hours. Get in there and wobble it to see if it's loose. If they need to be replaced, get a good Spicer U-joint from Napa.....and one that is greasable. Napa part # P338.......they have 3 different "grades" and I'd recommend getting the best ones, which are only about $13 each.

Should be a Spicer 5-170x. You need to punch the roll pin out of the shaft. Rotate it to the 6/12* and drive it up through the skid plate. Then throw it away and use a 5/16-2" bolt.

Not too hard, just take your time. I like to throw a little grease inside during assembly to keep the needle bearings in place. A vise will work, c-clamp or just tap them in gently.

If you have it apart, you may as well. Also check the carrier bearing. There's a write up around here for a replacement off Amazon for like $30.

Definitely replace both.......and ditto on trashing the roll pin and replacing it with the bolt and locknut. Once you drive out the roll pin, you'll understand why.

Update: replaced the U-Joints, had a guy who's a atv/utv mechanic do it at his house. I was there for moral support, this was his first 900.
Roll pin came out easy, after that he had to basically take the whole front end loose (bumper, front diff, front axles and shocks) and pull the shaft thru front where the diff mounts. Completed in approx 3 hrs and I'm amazed at how much noise those U-joints we're making.
