Ranger dies after driving it for while.

The engine dies after driving it for about 15 minutes. After it sits for about 5 minutes it will restart and run fine for about another 15 minutes. It's an 04 500 4x4. What could be wrong?

Check your fuel tank vent. If it does it again open your gas cap and see if it will start.

I have seen several atv's do exactly what your talking about and it turned out the fuel tank vent line was clogged with mud, dirt, or dust. Like carnivore mentioned next time it does this loosen the fuel cap and see if it want crank right back up. If it does it means the vent line is clogged and if not thats not your problem. Good luck........
I have the same exact problem, except mine is a 05 500 4x4. I do notice when I turn the key usually I hear a loud click and then some soft clicks, and I usaully start it after the soft click. Well when it stops and I turn the key I do not hear the soft clicks just the loud click form the rear end. I have figured out ( not very mechanically inclind) the soft clicks are from the fuel pump? The device the is right after the gas tank and has a wire or two coming out of it. I have found the fuel pump for $119, but do not want to change it if that is not the problem. I guess I wanted to get some expets advice on if they think it is the fuel pump or maybe electical. I have taken the fuel cap off with no luck. Just seems like the fuel pump stops and will not start again for 10 or so minutes. Never a problem with first start. Any help will be great. Thanks

Not likely a vent problem, this is not a gravity fed system, most likely a pump problem or electrical.
no it will not run with choke out, when it shuts down it acts like it is out of gas, and will just stop. when you try to start it, it will not turn over, lights and all run, just does not turn over, untill about 10min later, give or take some. It is not a EFI but I do hear a soft clicking sound when all is working, but when it acts up I do not hear it, The sound is coming from the fuel pump. I just do not know anything about the fuel pumps if they can act this way or not.
CHECK THE ELEC CONECTIONS TO THE PUMP UNDER THE SEAT ON TOP OF THE TANK THEY TEND TO HAVE BAD CONNECTION, NOT WATER TIGHT. ALSO THE LOUD CLICK IN THE REAR YOU HEAR IS THE SOLENOID ON THE REAR DIFF UNLOCKING THE REAREND. IF YOU PUT THE AWD SWITCH IN THE MIDDLE YOU WON'T HEAR THAT AND YOU CAN FOCUS ON THE FUEL PUMP.
cool, thanks for the the tip Cropcicle. I will check the conections tomorrow, I just don't understand why it will run fine then quit, for 10 mins or so. Almost like clock work. But thanks I will check the conections. I have had it in the water, but this just started happening maybe a week or two ago, and it has been dry hear in ohio.
Rich:
you said it stops & then it will not turn over. Are you saying it will not Crank?
It makes the sounds like it wants to start it just does not turn over. Kinda like if you go to start it, but it will not start, but if you step on the gas a little it takes right off. Kinda like it is out of gas, but not
BAD FUEL PUMP, 05 are famous for it, i have went through 4 of them on my 05 500
I Agree with Trevis sound like a Fuel Pump
Sounds like a fuel pump to me as well.
Ok I will get the new fuel pump and put it on, I was thinking the fuel pump also, but just wanted to get some experts opinions on it, prior to buying a part I did not need. I will repost once I put it on, and let you all know if it works. Thanks for all the help.
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY 2007 6X6, MY DEALER SAID IT WAS A PLUG IT THE ELE. HARNESS. THE DEALER SAID THEY HAD SOME PROBLEMS ON THE 2007 ELE. SYSTEMS

Do a pressure & flow test on pump First
Ok, how do I do a pressure and flow test. Is that something that I have to take it to a place to have done?
I had the same problem. I was driving and all the sudden it just stalled out. Pulled over it started up and i made it back to camp. Started looking for problems found a loose positive battery cable. Tighten up and had no problems sence.
