The sensor is bad. I've seen a lot of those fail and do exactly what you're describing.
Ranger gear selector
My 2011 ranger 800xp. When u put it in hi range it says it's in low and the rear diff locks in it stays locked in low but unlocks in reverse any idea why it does this
