Hey, first time posting and first time owning. Picked up my brothers 2007 700 ranger that had sat up for 3 years with 300 hours. changed the fuel pump and changed fluids and it runs great. The only fluid I hadn't changed was the rearend , had the oil just hadn't gotten to it yet. Yesterday I went to run around the block and started hearing noises coming from the back whenever it would slow down or take off, a clunking sound. took it home and pulled the plug on the housing and the level was low with a little grey milky color and it smelled a lil burnt. I topped it off and rode around for 5 minutes then drained it. It's still making noises I'm not sure what this is and I don't want to run it and cause more problems. Any ideas?

Drain the old oil and inspect for metal debris. milky color indicates the oil is mixed with water.
you'll have your answer if you find metal chunks in the oil
good luck
post what you find

I know about the water and it did have some mixed but I've seen a lot worse, I'm just worried it had the water sitting in there unmixed for the three years it sat and it ate a bearing and I don't want it "exploding" taking out the case .

I had an '08 and it did the same thing. After I got an aftermarket clutch it stopped. As long as it's not grinding while you're running I THINK your okay.

Guess i'll find out tomorrow, I have five '"girls" coming over and i'm taking them way off in the woods to where I know a bunch of blackberrys are lol. I guess I could break down under worse circumstances. I couldn't find anything else that could be causing it.

I'd check that bracket before I headed out on a trip. they usually break right around the front right portion of the bracket. when they do the pinion end will lift on takeoff, throwing the park brake disk right into the park brake assembly, cutting the springs, and making a nice mess. If left long enough, it'll break the whole right side bracket and work on the left side.

Well, I found the problem before we left and fixed it although I'm a lil confused. Maybe someone can explain it. It ended up being the back left bearing. I rode around after filling the rear-end back up, looked real close at the old oil and gear in the fill hole and didn't find shavings or damage, the noise was still there and it was a dry metal binding clunk so that made me look elsewhere and when I wiggled the back hubs the one on the passenger side had excessive play. I pulled the hub off and the exposed bearings were in place and had grease but the race that was on the hub had been turning on the shaft and was dry. There were some gauling, I greased it and knocked it up and down until it had grease everywhere and then packed grease into the whole assembly, no more noise. My question is why was that even moving? The bearings looked fine although I wasn't expecting to see exposed balls, did the race somehow come apart? It didn't look like anything broke but every bearing I've changed on four Wheelers were a sealed type bearing. I'm going to check the other three later this week. Thanks again for the ideas.

The race on the wheel bearings are made from two parts. One inserts from the rear end side and one from the outside. There are two sets of ball bearings one for each race. I have had mine do the same when pulling an axle

It is a "sealed" bearing, but they suck. What you described is pretty typical of a worn out wheel bearing, and I'd DEFINITELY check the other side because it is probably not much better than the side you just replaced.
