99 ranger 6x6. ok guys I am working on a friends 6x6. The u joints in the front rear axle were bad, needed a front axle boot, a.arm bushings. I got all that replaced. It also had a carb issue where it will idle fine and run at low speeds, but when you floor it, it hesitates. I took the carb off and cleaned it, changed the fuel filter.

Now I have it all back together and when I drive it, it seems to want to pull hard to the left, the carb still hesitates when I floor it, and when I go down a hill it wants to free wheel.

I have also replaced the drive belt. Im am at a loss as to what to check next. I guess Im gonna drain the tank and see if there is any water in it.

any suggestions? I dont remember it free wheeling before I took the carb off. Im wondering if maybe the idle was move or something is out of adjustment.

When it free wheels it has a real loud whine/ whistle.

This machine only has 736 hours on it.

any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

if I'm not mistaken, rangers don't have an engine brake, so it will free wheel, unless you tap the gas and keep the clutch engaged, like you would on a snowmobile. As for the hesitation, have you changed the plug?

Make sure the main jet is completely clear, and check the float height. Both can cause poor performance in upper rpm's.

As far as the free wheeling goes......maybe the U-joints were so bad that the free wheeling seems worse no that it's spinning freely???

If it's pulling to the left, there might be an issue with the hilliard cage in the front diff'. Jack up the front end and spin the wheels to see if they spin freely.

never thought of that on the the free wheeling. I took the carb out and soaked it in carb cleaner, and sprayed 3 can thru it, and put it back on, it is sick it wants to backfire thru the airbox when I floor it. Im at a loss Ive never had this much trouble with a carb. does anyone know how many turns I need to back the adjuster screw. Not sure of the correct term, the parts microfiche just labels "adjuster". It is in the center of the carb on the bottom on the outside of the bowl.

Idle mixture screw...controls the pilot circuit. Two and a half to three turns out from lightly seated.

Double and triple check that the diaphragm is seated properly in the top of the carb. A little Vaseline in the groove will help hold it there till you get the cap back on. It can be a pain to get it just right.

If the carb is gummed badly, carb cleaner alone will not clean all of the passages. Plus, carb cleaner is very bad for the diaphragm. If you have not done so, I highly recommend disassembling the carb and cleaning all passages and jet orifices with a jet cleaning tool or very small pick........just be careful not to enlarge the orifice holes.

The carb was not gummed at all. Gonna get a rebuild kit as the float valve seems to have a worn spot. dont know if its enough to matter, but couldnt hurt. got all the jets out but the Pilot jet, and someone has stripped the notch off of it where the screwdriver goes, anyone know how to get it out if I cant get a screwdriver to work?
