Over time I've noticed a common thread seems to prevail when people, especially new members, are asking for help. My suggestion is that Forde make a sticky in the New Member and perhaps even the General Discussion areas which conveys the following:
PRC has several members who are willing to help in assisting other members with locating and repairing problems they are having with their Polaris vehicles. I won't mention any names for fear of leaving someone out and offending them, but there are at least a half dozen members that regularly offer assistance and more whose expertise is offered as the need arises or their time constraints allow them to post. Unfortunately, sometimes members present problems with nothing more than a short sentence like "my 2002 Ranger won't start what is the problem"? Such a question provides little to no information for those who wish to help to work with. Much more needs to be included. When so little information is provided the likelihood a larger number of other members coming to your assistance diminishes. It takes some of their valuable time to ask for additional information and try to weed through what has been done to remedy the problem so far.
Members seeking assistance should consider how difficult it would be for their doctor to try to diagnose a condition and prescribe a medicine never having seen or spoken with their patient previously and the only contact being an Internet connection. Granted, Polaris vehicles aren't as complicated as the human body, but they still have many components, any of which can cause trouble. Much like doctors, those trying to help need specifics and as much information as possible in order to provide accurate answers and a plausible diagnosis.
When asking for assistance I suggest providing the following information:
Year/Model of the Vehicle
Is vehicle new to current owner or been a one owner vehicle
Description of Problem
History of previous problems that might be related
How old is the fuel/Ethanol or Non Ethanol
How long since vehicle was last used and ran normally
When problem began (Example: After going through deep water or After filling Fuel Tank or after sitting unused for a year)
Did problem begin after Recent Modification or Accessory Addition
Under what Conditions does Problem Occur
Odors, Unusual Noises, Changes in "Feel" of Vehicle while Riding
Any repairs already attempted and the Outcome (Example: Cleaned Battery Terminals, no change)
Results of any Tests already performed (Compression, Spark, Voltage, Battery Condition etc.)
Follow up questions should include what has been done and the results
In short, any information that can be provided, including pictures and video if available, to give those who wish to help as many clues as possible so they can analyze the problem and attempt to provide advice.
Finally, it's always nice for those who have attempted to help to hear the final outcome and what actually fixed the problem. There is something to be learned from the experiences of others.
