I'm finally getting around to installing my new TPS, in hopes that my coughing/choking Ranger will be back to normal after the replacement. I backprobed (with a voltmeter) the harness where the yellow wire goes in. My black probe, I grounded. I turned on the key (not starting the Ranger), and begin analyzing the numbers.

Right off the bat, it was at a very high .91V. I started backing out the screw, and got it down to .79V. Unfortunately, the screw is all the way backed out and the numbers aren't dropping any. I need to get it down to .66V, since I have a 2006 XP.

So...I'm hoping baxy or demarko or anyone else might be able to give me some pointers. Why can't I get it below .79V? The manual claims that if I back it all the way out, it should be at .58V. To make the voltage drop, should I be backing OUT the screw or going IN with it?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,
Gary

Nevermind...I panicked too early :) If you back out the "star" bolt that mounts the TPS to the throttle body, it allows you to rotate the tps. Rotating the tps drops the voltage (or increases it, if you rotate the other way). So...I've "zero'd" it out by rotating it until it said .528V and retightened the star bolt.

Now...I just have to calibrate it to .66V.

Thanks to baxy and demarko for the great write up!

Okay...I've calibrated it to .66V (spot on). It idled great, so I decided to take it around the block. If I mash the gas pedal, it gets up and goes very well without any hesitation. However, I've noticed a few new issues:

1) From no gas to ~1/8 gas, it hesitates a lot. If I jump on the gas, there's no hesitation...it's only when I baby it.
2) I noticed that when I jump on the throttle and get it up to ~30 or so mph, the second I let off it back fires.

I checked the voltage reading after my test ride, and it's still registering 0.660V

Any ideas???

Thanks,
Gary

Did a diagnostic "blink code" check, and I'm only getting 6-1 (end of diagnostic check). So...I'm not getting any codes thrown. Any ideas?

HI,
Been out of town, hopefully you have everything under control.
I dont think I have either issue w/ my ranger, definitely not the back fire. I will check on the slight hesitation and report back.

Thanks Mark! I'm still having the issues. I noticed one of my plug wires loose, so I reattached it firmly. Unfortunately, that wasn't the issue...as it still hesitates and has a backfire.

I notice you have an '06 as well. Did you set yours to 0.660V?

Thanks,
Gary

Well shoot...I'm now wondering if something else is bad. I'll go back and check my plugs and wires as well.

I'll also re-calibrate .528 base and .66 for the offset. What did you use for that funky screw? I'm using a small needle nose plier, but it's wreaking havoc on the screw head.

Thanks!

I took a hollow screw driver handle and put it in the vise to make a flat end to it and now it works fine for adjusting the screw.

Very clever! I didn't think to use forceps or a screw driver handle. I've just about torn mine to shreds, because the head is so soft. Still can't figure out why my Ranger is bogging with little gas, and backfiring at high revs. I'll start a few separate threads on those, to hopefully get others input.

Thanks for all the help!

Mark,
I haven't installed any of those yet. After I purchased all of these items, my Ranger started acting up. I figured I would replace the TPS, make sure it runs right, then install the mods.

Unfortunately, I can't get it running right...so I'm putting all my mods on hold for now.

Thanks,
Gary

What's the upper voltage when the throttle completely depressed?

Gary, start over with making sure the throttle body is clean inside, then backing the screw all the way out also make sure your throttle cable is disconnected. Loosen the Torx screw on the TPS and adjust it to .478 V, make sure it still says .478 after it is tightened. Then turn the screw in until ist says .660 V. This should get you there.
