Hitting it from underneath with the rubber mallet is how I got mine off. You can smack it pretty good but I wouldn't get to carried away. Hit around it in different places too. One thing that helps is to get someone to pull up on it while you tap on it. I remember reading on here a long time agao where a member used a ratchet strap and went around the steering wheel and then up to the cage. Putting some tension on it should help ya. I guess I was lucky. I just hit it a few times and it came right off.

LOL!!! Sorry to laugh but this reminds me of mine. Most of these folks had their steering wheel come off easily. Mine was a rascal to get off. When it finally did come off, it looked like they had used a whole tube of Loctite on it! To get mine off, I enlisted my Dad's help to swing the hammer while I pulled up on it. Thread the nut back on the shaft till flush and then strike the shaft with a hammer. It requires a lot more force than I was comfortable with but it finally came off.

"Kroil" is the oil that creeps - get a can and spray the nut and steering shaft. Then sit back and enjoy a cold Heineken. [:p] After about ten minutes, whack the underside of the original steering wheel with a large ball-peen hammer. [)][)]

Not too hard, but just moderate thumps all around the underside of the original wheel. [:D] If nothing happens, repeat the above process. Kroil will loosen most anything, and the Heineken is a bonus. [^]

I have pulled a couple including mine. My came of with a whack as mentioned with a rubber mallet. The other two as Bruce mentioned I think they poured a whole bottle of loctite down on the shaft. I had to make a puller from a old bearing puller I had and they popped off after applying puller pressure followed by some rapping under neath with my rubber mallet.
