I have a 2012 Ranger XP 800 with a sob story. It was stolen with very few miles, luckily got it back but now it has issues. The losers that stole it ran it without an air filter for some reason now I have low compression in one cylinder. Without thinking much (I figured the motor is toast) I ripped the head off. Now I don't know what to replace valves or rings or both? A second issues is that the spark plug of the cylinder that had low compression appears to have been hit. No signs of damage to head or piston what could have bent the spark plug? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Don't know how long it ran with no air filter or how much dirt/dust it consumed but typically dirt/dust will take the rings out.
if you're that far in it I'd do a valve job too, but as Trog says you can contact Nflow for reman price of an engine. You might even get some core charge for your old one.

It's almost certainly rings. You will need to get the cylinder diamond honed also. You can check the valves by pouring some alcohol on the head and see if any flows through.
The real question is how much dirt made its way into the crankcase?

Thanks for the advice everybody. Decided to go all out and take more apart. The rings were obliterated. At least we could account for all the pieces. I think I could eliminate the valves as the problem, but still going to have head checked out.

the valves will be noticably sunken into the head if they've pounded out the seats and the valve surfaces themselves. Did it score the bores too? you're most likely looking at least new rings/pistons.

What about this spart plug that you said was damaged? any marks on that piston face? hows the bearings/bushings on the rods?

best of luck!
