Hey guys. I've been snooping for a while.

Just bought a new Ranger 900 Crew and am trying to figure it all out. I haven't yet picked it up from the dealer.

I want to put a winch on it and its between the Warn 4500 and Polaris 4500. Both synthetic.

I was going with the Warn due to reputation. The service guy said Polaris has improved in the last few years and said they are as good or better than the Warn.

Warn's warranty is 3 years, Polaris in one year.

What's the good, the bad and the ugly?
Are they equally good?

thanks,

ksks

I thought the Polaris winch was a Warn, just with a Polaris logo on it...

Personally, I'd get a Viper, but between Warn and Polaris, I'd go Warn.

I had a Polaris 4500 on my last Ranger. I used it for 5 trouble free years. The only issue I had was trying to winch out my buddy's rzr and the cable snapped. Luckily no one was hurt! I opted for a 6k Pro HD Polaris with synthetic rope on my new ranger because I'm sure my buddy's stock rzr is gonna try and follow me and I'm gonna have to winch him out again:excitement:.

I went with a 3500 Terra superwinch. Bought the winch with all wiring and relays with remote switch wire extensions and the mounting bracket and had barely over 300$ into the entire setup. I used it the other day when I got stuck and pulled a tree right out of the ground thank god there was a second bigger tree haha. I'm super happy with my winch I would never pay for a Polaris winch. My cousins ATV had a Polaris winch on it and the motor took a dump 14 months after knstall. He went with same setup I have and has had it for 4 years and no issues

Why the viper?
1. They (Motoalliance) are a PRC sponsor - goes a long way in my book!
2. I have two of them - impressed with their build
3. If you have a problem or question, you get to talk with a KNOWLEDGEABLE person
4. Had a minor problem with a remote module once, called them and another was in the mail that day - didn't even ask me if was still under warranty (it was)!
5. Peter, the owner of the company, participates as an individual in our forum discussions - he knows what our concerns are... and addresses them!
6. They have an extensive line of winches to choose from
7. You can get spare parts (in the unlikely event you'll need one!)
8. The number of their distribution partners appears to be growing daily - not surprising when you have a good product
9. Their "on sale" and "specials" are in fact, just that - significant savings!
10. Extensive documentation available on their website

..if I had more coffee, I'm sure I could think of other reasons!

(Can you tell I'm a Viper fan?!! :D )

If the dealer only offers warn and polairs winches coupled to the fact you may want the dealer to install it as part of "setup", which I'm sure they would, then I would go warn. In my opinion, I think Polaris would be better off focusing on the bigger picture (making the best side by side machines on the plant) and avoid greedy tendencies of repackaging various times, e.g., oil, winches, etc., as these are distractions from the bigger picture, my opinion.

Thanks for the replys.

I went ahead with the Polaris winch. Didn't look like there were many negative responses.
The dealer can in stall everything before I pick it up.

The dealer would only order Polaris. I could have bought the Warn and had them install it, but was a bit cheaper to go with the Polaris.

Will be getting the 4500-S, with wiring to front and rear, and using the hitch adaptor so I can switch the hitch as needed and take it off when not using it. I'll mostly be using it to drag logs.

I wouldnt drag logs with the winch use a chain or cable the dragging against the winch will strip the gears.IMO
