As the title suggests, in a moment of mental fatigue, I put 5 gallons in my completely empty ranger. Cranked it up, it ran for 5 seconds then sputtered and shut off. Tried to start it a few cranks but no luck. Walked away and a few minutes later I realIzed I had put off road diesel in it.

Here's what I did.
Video 1

1. drain tank. I parked on a side hill to get fluid for easiest draining. Used a ball syphon. Took about 30 minutes for 5 gallons

2. Take off fuel supply line on top of motor. Use a container to catch fuel. Turn key on to prime fuel pump. 1-2 oz per time. Turn key off and repeat until no more comes through pump. Took me 5-6 times. Reconnect

3. I went ahead and replaced spark plugs using NGK iridium

4. Fill tank w 5 gallons of fresh gas. Hugest octane available.

5 add blaster 1 oz per 2 gallon or your preference of fuel injector cleaner (diesel clogs the injectors)

6. Fill the rest of your tank to full (dilutes any remaining diesel left in tank )

7 add sea foam , follow instructions

8. Make sure battery is fully charged.

9, turn key on to prime fuel pump, attempt to start for 15 seconds. Turn key off. Let sit for 10 minutes to let starter cool. Repeat as necessary

What I found was after 10 attempts or so I got a low battery indicator on display. I put battery tender on machine and left it alone for the night. I had to repeat 2 more times.

Total crank attempts for me was 22 until first ignition. Attempt 23 it ran for 10-15 seconds and shut off Attempt 24 it fired right up and idled fine. Between 1200-1250 rpm

I'll let it warm up tonight when I get home and take it for a ride to get the engine opened up and hopefully blow out the exhaust.

I've never even come close to making this mistake before. It was a perfect storm of being physically and mentally exhausted and not paying attention. I pump off road diesel all the time for my tractor so It wasn't out of the ordinary for me to use the pump i did. But I did use my new container so I should have caught it. Just made a mistake. Luckily it didn't cost me a blown motor.

My son's friend put diesel fuel in my Ranger. Once I realized what had happened, I found this post and followed all of the instructions. This was spot on. Mine cycled 19 times before cranking. Thanks for the info.
