Who runs a rear winch? I have '14 Ranger 800 and it looks like only one company makes a rear mount for it, EMP. BUT it says it only supports winches up to 4000. I have a spare Viper Elite 4500 just layin' around and want to know if it fits or if I'm able to drill new holes.

Also, can I use the same contactor but a different switch or will I have to use a new contactor?

I'd weld me a flat plate on an old 2" ball mount where I could remove it when not in use (2" receiver on rear). This is the strongest place to mound a winch on the rear, plus most winches come with a mounting plate when new, but most are not used because buyers buy a plate that fits their model UTV for the front and discard the original plate. I don't know why you would want anything stronger then this, plus it's a very inexpensive fix to what you want to do.

The only down side to the rear mount...is its 'so' low...generally buried in mud when you need it. Even some front mount winches seem to mount quite low.

Do you have a pic of your mount? Also, did you run 2 contactors/solenoids or just 1?

I'm not worried about it being low in the mud. When I'm riding deep stuff I run the line up high so its easy to grab.

I have the EMP mount on my 900. It's a nice bracket, and seems like it should be plenty strong. My winch is only 3000 lbs though. I had it originally on a receiver mount, but ended up in a situation where I needed it, and I couldn't dig the receiver out to get to it, as it was hung up on a tree root. For the most part, pulling yourself out in reverse shouldn't require as much effort since you already went through the same path once.

As for sharing contactors, I'm not sure I understand how that would work. 2 winches using 1 contactor? It seems that you would have to have some kind of kill switch to each winch to make sure that they don't both operate at the same time when you push the button. Maybe I'm thinking too far into it?

I only have one winch i move it front or rear.
Same here I made a multi mount. I did make a brkt that ties into the frame that raises the attachment point. The downside is you can't tip the box.

Ole Nasty, I can see where the rear mounted winch in the 2" receiver would not work very well in the mud and yes, I just use the Ranger around the property and try to stay out of the mud. I do ride dual sport bikes and have then for off road riding, but at age 70 I'm riding the bike less off road then I used to. At this point in my life I don't think I will become a mud slinger, or rock crawling UTV guy, but it looks like fun. Thanks for asking me to ride with you.

I like the idea of a rear mounted winch..I have been trying to figure out a way to run 2 winches on my 900. I have a 2500lb that I got as a gift and trying to find some use for it because I know it won't do much for a full size side by side!

When I bolted the crossmember to the frame, I used longer bolts & drilled thru both "flanges" of the upright. The bolt passes thru piece of round tubing between the flanges so they aren't "pinched" when tightening the fasteners.

Also when running your leads to the rear winch, you may want to talk to an auto electric business about fabbing some leads. I used a kit from Warn:

Warn Industries - Accessories for ATV, Side X Side & Motorcycle Winches: Electrical Components

I had to rework the leads. I think Warn designs them for UTVs w/ the battery mounted under the hood rather than under the seat. W/ my 500, the front leads were short & the rear leads too long. I had to get 2 leads made up by a snow plow dealer.
