14" Wheel Question

Hello,

I know there have been several threads created on this topic, and I have searched forms and google for days and I am still slightly confused. So before I pulled the trigger I wanted to consult with the PRC experts.

I have a 2014 Polaris Ranger 900XP that has roughly 2500 miles on it. I farm daily out of this machine and 85% of the time I am on blacktop roads traveling from farm to farm OR driving in pasture fields. The other portion of the time I am in rough terrain as far as cattle pasture goes but nothing like people who four wheel their Rangers would be in.

The tires need to be replaced, and I have a tire wholesaler who I get great prices from for DOT Passenger vehicle tires. I am wanting to upgrade to a 14" rim to allow me to select a decent cheap all train tire.

I want to keep the wheel size standard for all four. So I am thinking 14x7 with a 4+3 offset.

The tire size that I was thinking is 225/70/R14.

Do you all see anything wrong with the proposed setup?

11 is as wide as I would personally go and feel comfortable with. Some run 12 wides on a 7 inch rim. The 9 inch wide tire you are looking at won't be bad. A ton of guys run 10s all they way around too. Keep in mind the wider the tire the better flotation you get on soft ground. The wider tire won't dig down as much as a skinny would. But going from a 9 to a 10 you probably won't be able to tell. Also the more narrow tire will steer a little better on hard pack surfaces

My opinion the paticular size you are looking at seems like it would be a good fit for your needs. What tire are you looking at?

Honestly I do not know, I'm going to call the distributor tomorrow and see what they have in that size. Usually for vehicles I get what ever they are running a special on. But this is a little bit of a different animal than just calling up the supplier with a tire size.

I might be a little weary of a straight street tire. Like something you would see on a car. If you could get some type of all terrain that would be better for the different terrain you may encounter. But you know where you are driving better then I do so a street tire may be okay.

I started out with an aftermarket set of 12" wheels and Bighorns mainly due to people saying that a 14" wheel and tire is more prone to a failure due to pinching between a rock and the rim of the wheel.

I totally agree with them, however for the type of driving and terrain I'm on, the 12" wheels and tire combo I had was just barely adequate in regards to load.

After upgrading to 14" wheels and a heavier tire I'm much happier. Handling is better too due to stiffer and shorter sidewalls. I really like the 14" STI HD5's I have due to the beadlock. This makes tire changes a personal affair. You just need a bucket or stump to set the wheel over to help set the rear bead. I was surprised at how easy it was to put my own tires on!!

However, I saw this shortly after I upgraded to the wheels and tires in my signature. http://www.prcforum.com/forum/17-ranger-discussions/52362-general-grabber-27-tires.html

If I were to do it over again, I'd probably put the General Grabber AT3's on mine. I run these on my Tacoma in a larger size and am very pleased with this tire. For the type of work I do around the house, this would have been ideal for me. Snow performance is great as is general work in fields, dirt roads. In mud they're ok, not anything like my current Pitbull Rockers though.

General Grabber AT3's are very quiet and smooth on road as well. In comparison to the stock tires that came with my Tacoma, the Generals were only slightly louder.

Additionally, the Generals will probably last a whole lot longer just due to less weight on them, plus they look awesome on the ride in the link!

Will AT Grabbers fit the 8 inch wide sixr wheels on the rears. I have some bighorns on it now with less than 300 miles on them and I'd like something a little smoother. 7 inch wheels on the front so I know they would fit.

Grabber? AT² | General Tire

The website says no by 1/2". Your call on trying it. In the end you'd only have to buy 2 of the 7" wheels if it didn't work out.

Man that looks good! Makes me want to wear out my tires just so I can get these on mine.
