Prop Shaft question - how long have you gotten out of your prop shaft/u joints?

New Ranger owner here, picked up a really nice 2014 900 xp recently with 5900 miles on it. The previous owner was a retired older fellow who bought it new. He said he replaced the prop shaft a long time ago, and gave me the old one.

It's in really nice shape, but makes a terrible vibration when driving fast. Is it normal that a well kept machine like this would already be needing a second prop shaft replacement? Just wanting to see how long people get out of these things, it just doesn't seem right to me, like something else must be wrong.

I've got two friends with similar vintage machines and they drive on the highway like a car, mine is vibrating bad enough when going 55 that you just don't feel safe, so I need to get it fixed, just trying to figure out if it ends up being the prop shaft and not a diff or CVs or something, how long do these things last for? If I'm going to have to be pulling it out every thousand miles or something, I may do the frame cut underneath vs. having to disassemble the whole front end every time. Also wondering how often it's the u joints vs. the actual yokes or shafts from the transmission or front diff that have the wear? Thanks for the add, looking forward to ice fishing with this sweet rig!

All Ranger u-joints wear out at some point. The reason is the output and input shafts are not on the same plane, very stupid design. It will be hard to tell exactly what is causing the vibration because it's happening at 55 mph, hard to inspect when flying down the road. Grab the front and rear yokes and see if there is play in the u-joint.

As far as how long in between u-joint changes it's hard to say. I see thousands of miles between changes but the average speed of Rangers in my area is about six mph. I would guess they would wear out much faster driving regularly at higher speeds.
So I jacked up the front end to check if CVs were making any noise, the driver's side is making some noise. Does this sound like a bad CV? Second vid is passenger side. No noise.
