I could use a little help here guys. I've read several threads about check engine/EFI trouble codes. My check engine light goes on and off. I pull codes and they all seem to basically come to the same thing....Idle Air Control Valve.

520269 3 idle air control valve m17; iac stepper pin 4 > driver circuit short to B+
520269 5 idle air control valve m17; iac stepper pin 4 > driver circuit open/grounded
520270 3 idle air control valve m17; iac stepper pin 6 > driver circuit short to B+
520267 5 idle air control valve m17; iac stepper pin 1 > driver circuit open/grounded

I think you get the idea. i have several codes and they all seem to come to this.

My question is this something i can fix myself? I took my unit to the shop and after 2 days of being there, the guy told me he couldnt find the problem. He would clear the codes and they would come back. one code led to another kind of thing. I needed the unit back to go on a trip and he told me it would be fine and to bring it back after my trip. I'm not sure if i feel comfortable driving it for 2 days in the mountains/trails with the check engine going on and off.

Is this a harness or bare wire or what? Any help/advice you guys can help me with would be much appreciated.

Let me add that I am not having any performance issues. No problems in idling, mid range or at top end. the engine seems to run fine.

Its likely you have a bad wiring harness to the IAC. Theres no way to know if you will have issues on the ride, but if your not having issues now you will probably be OK. I just can't guarantee that.

Is this something I myself can fix? Quite honestly I'm not sure exactly what to look for. I'm a pretty decent mechanical person but I guess I'm not really sure what I'm looking at or looking for.

I guess I need to go back on what I said earlier. Now the engine doesnt want to idle. If it does, its at a very low rpm, around 700-750 and sounds kinda rough. Sometimes goes up to around 1300-1400 but goes back down to 700-750.

Sure does sound familiar!! Mine turned out to the IAC harness. I know the harnesses are pricey but the '11 800s are notorious for that. Finding the failing wire(s) can be really tricky. The dealer may be able to run diags on it and pinpoint it (maybe!) and will probably tell you it's a bad harness, or you can roll the dice and just order and install the harness yourself - not a difficult install. Could be somewhere else, but that is where I'd start.

Thank you for you responses carnivore and fswan. I agree everything seems to point to the IAC harness. I hope to take my machine to a dealer/service in the morning. Hopefully they can find/fix problem before I am supposed to leave Thursday.

fswan.....may i ask what the cost was on your IAC harness?

My machine gave me the same codes and fits. It ended up being the blue/black wire at the IAC plug was broken inside the coating just outside the connector. I pulled the wire from the plug and soldered it back together. No more problems since then.

Thanks Jason. It ended up being IAC harness. 2 wires completely burned. After finding/ordering a new harness, the repair took about 15-20 minutes.
